What is a cookie?
Cookies are small text files stored on your computer. They all get unique numbers.
There are different types of cookies in use:
- Session cookies
These are stored temporarily on your computer when you visit our website and are deleted as soon as you close your browser. - Permanent cookies
These remain on your computer until you delete them. - First-party cookies
These cookies are placed on your computer by IKEA when you visit our website. - Third-party cookies
These cookies are used to collect information for advertising and personalised content and for web statistics and come from IKEA partners when you browse the IKEA website (these are third-party cookies that allow you, for example, to see ads for products that you have previously clicked on or searched for). These third-party cookies provide a picture of the user's browsing habits and it is possible to block these types of cookies in your browser by making a customised setting on your computer, if you do not want third-party cookies to be accepted.
Why does IKEA use cookies?
Cookies (and other technologies) allow us to do great things to improve your user experience. We collect information about you, when browsing our website, through several types of cookies or data collectors. Below you can see what kind of cookies we have and how we use the information collected:
- Necessary cookies
These cookies are essential for the functioning of the website and cannot be switched off. They are usually only used when you use a function on the website that needs a response, such as setting cookies, logging in or filling in a form. You can set your browser to block or warn you about these cookies, but some parts of the website will not work. Necessary cookies also help us to detect and track fraud or other attempts at unauthorised access to your information and our services. - Performance cookies
These cookies allow us to count the number of visits and how you found our website. We can then measure and improve our website. They help us know which pages are more or less popular and how visitors navigate around the site. - Website customisation
These cookies are used for improved functionality and personalisation. They are used by us or a partner whose services are available on our website. If you do not allow these cookies, some of these services may stop working - Marketing and social media
We collect data on how our websites and other digital devices are used. The information is used for customer segmentation for marketing and online advertising. The goal is to communicate and advertise as relevant products and services to you as possible. For example, by using Facebook/Meta, we match your unique Facebook cookie IDs with our ads on Facebook to understand if the ad you clicked on was relevant to you. Additionally, we may ask Meta to search their platform for people with similar interests to yours and show them an IKEA ad. What we may share is, for instance, your browsing behavior, along with your masked email and cookie IDs.
Are the cookies allowing me to see marketing from IKEA on other sites?
Yes, IKEA uses marketing cookies. These are used to give you the best experience of IKEA - both when you visit us and when you leave our website. We use the information in these cookies to
- Give you content you seem to be interested in right away. We see which parts of our website you visited and where you clicked and conclude what you want to see more of. This information is used to determine which marketing activities may be of most interest to you. That's why you may find that the sofa you clicked on appears on other pages as well, in banners from IKEA.
- We also cooperate with other companies that help us with our marketing, so-called retargeting, which is more or less our digital shop window (e.g. through banner advertising). This means that these companies may place cookies (see above) so that we can provide you with the inspiration you want in other channels as well. Based on how you move around our website, you will simply see marketing targeted to you where we have purchased advertising.
Under Information about cookies in our cookie banner you will find which marketing partners and cookies are activated under each category.
Have you ever wondered why you see ads from us when you browse other sites? Or how we can keep your information throughout the buying process?
Cookies, web beacons and pixel tags are different technologies that we use to help you find what you are looking for, to avoid filling in data that you have already filled in on a previous occasion or to enable you to receive offers and information about news that may be of interest to you. We aim to simplify your use of our services and improve your experience with IKEA.
What is the difference between cookies and web beacons, pixel tags and other technologies used by IKEA?
Unlike the text files in a cookie, web beacons (or pixel tags as they are also called) are of a more graphic nature. You can think of a web beacon as a transparent picture superimposed on another picture (such as an email) that records where on the image you click. Our web beacon thus enables us to know what information you find interesting and want to read more about.
Why are server-to-server technologies not visible in the cookie list?
Technically, server-to-server functionalities based on JavaScript, and other similar technologies, are not cookies and therefore do not appear in the cookie list. These are also set by us in your browser, transmitting data to our server. From there, limited data will be shared with our advertising partners like Meta for targeted advertising purposes. We treat these technologies as marketing and social media cookies so that you can make an active choice about whether you want them enabled or not. We will not activate this functionality until you have given your consent.
When we may share your cookies
We may in some cases use a data processor to help with our marketing. When we share your data, it will be used for the same purposes for which we originally collected it. When we send your data outside the EU/EEA, this is done according to particularly stringent requirements and agreements.
What if I no longer want you to save my cookies?
You can always change your browser or device settings for the use and scope of cookies. Click on the settings of your browser or device to learn more about how to change your cookie settings. In your settings you can block all cookies, except necessary cookies. You can also choose to accept first-party cookies only or you can choose to delete all cookies when you close your browser. Remember that necessary cookies are needed for you to be able to use our website and services.
