Any space can become your new favourite spot by adding some blooming flowers. Whether you’re an expert botanist or a garden novice you can find a suitable plant matching your preferences at IKEA.

Before adding a new member to your garden family, make sure that it’s going to be happy at the spot you have in mind. Learn more about great house plants for either indoor or outdoor use in the guide below.

Some great choices for indoor house plants

House plants are a great way to add colour and vitality to your home. Additionally, indoor plants help freshen up your home by absorbing gases and removing harmful substances from the air. So, adding a few lovely plants to your home should be an easy choice. But where to begin? Here are a few tips on great indoor plant types that add colour, freshen the air and are very easy to take care of.

Aloe plants

Aloe plants are a so-called succulent. This means the plant has parts that are thickened and fleshy, making it possible for them to retain water in arid climates or soil conditions.

Aloe plants are beautifully green and easy to take care of since they need very little water. But they do need a lot of sun, so make sure to put them in a nice sunny spot. Cactus The prickly cactus is a survivor of world renown, and it can add a certain toughness to your home. Cacti can store moisture for quite a long time, meaning you only need to water them occasionally. Simply add more water once the top inches of the soil have completely dried out.

At IKEA you'll find different kind of potted cactuses to suit your style.

Dracaena plants

The dracaenas are palm like plants with green and spikey leaves. They come in many different variations, where some are short and bushy, and others can grow quite tall. They are also easy to take care of, especially if you tend to forget about watering. This group of plants require thrifty watering. Wait until the top half of the soil is dry before watering it again. Depending on the light this can take up a few weeks.

Top outdoor house plants

Outdoor plants can make any outside space feel livelier and more welcoming. Fill your garden bed with some fresh plants or decorate your balcony with plants in pots and flower boxes.

Begonias

Begonias are great, versatile outdoor plants that are easy to take care of. They are just as happy in a pot as they are in a flower bed. Just make sure to put them in a spot with partial or dappled sunlight and allow the soil to dry out between the watering. Begonias come in many different colours such as red, orange, yellow and pink. So, feel free to pick begonias that match your style.

If you have a balcony, try planting these beauties in a flower box with hangers to add a burst of colour to your home.

Hydrangeas (Hortensia)

Hortensia is a popular plant because of its large and colourful flowers. They can grow as trees or climbing vines, but most are grown as a shrub. Hydrangeas can grow in full to partial sunlight, depending on the variety of plant. In general, they are keen on water but can, like every plant, be over-watered. A basic rule is to look at the leaves. Are they starting to drop? Then it's time for watering.

Jasminum

Jasminum plants, or jasmines, are known for the seductive scent that comes once the flowers bloom. The jasmine is a climbing tree and can, if you allow it, grow quite big. It’s a perfect choice if you have an espalier in your garden. The jasmine is happiest in a sunny, but cool place. When it comes to water, this is a thirsty plant especially when it blooms. A good rule is to keep the soil slightly moist at all times.
