Rediscover our most iconic designs in the Nytillverkad collection

In Nytillverkad, we get to celebrate some of our favourite designs from the past and update them for a new generation. But some classics never left the stores. Designed by Noboru Nakamura over 40 years ago, the POÄNG armchair and the KLIPPAN sofa proved to be truly timeless. With a low back and in bold suits, they look sharper than ever!

Classics in constant change

Meet the KLIPPAN sofa in fun outfits straight out of the IKEA catalogue from 1984 and discover a brand new low-back design of the POÄNG armchair. Designed and updated by Japanese designer Noboru Nakamura, these additions to the Nytillverkad collection will transport you to the confident ‘80s with their popping colours, straight lines and minimalistic expression.

Less snoozing. More socialising.

No more dozing off mid-conversation. The new POÄNG low-back armchair lost its headrest to become more social. A place for chatting, debating and collaborating. Match or mix it up with frames and cushions in red, birch/beige and black.

A sofa for the many

The KLIPPAN covers in bright red, blue and yellow are easy to carry and can give your KLIPPAN sofa a new, fresh look. The covers come in matching textile bags. Bring home a new sofa under your arm or give it away the next time you go to a housewarming.

The Japanese flag only has a circle. It’s so simple. I like to approach my design in a similar way.

Meet the designer

Japanese designer Noboru Nakamura (1938–2023) worked for IKEA for three years in the late ’70s. During this time, he designed many products, but two would live on even after he was gone: the popular POEM/POÄNG armchair and the KLIPPAN sofa. Learn more in this interview from 2022.

Cool and comfortable

The large, soft cushions of the ÖNNESTAD armchair make it as stylish and comfy as ever. And the wide seat of the high-end living room stool HOLMSJÖ allows you to sit comfortably for longer.

Old souls in new suits

At the end of the 1960s, when the MILA armchair was first introduced, life was supposed to be relaxed and cosy with reclined armchairs and spacious coffee tables. Back again as DYVLINGE, the swivel armchair now has an extra leg for stability, and the BAGGBODA side table comes in fresh new colours.

It spins again!

Some things are too great to stay forgotten. When the DYVLINGE swivel armchair reached IKEA customers as MILA in 1967, it was a huge success. The low, soft and reclined armchair was then nicknamed the anti-stress armchair. Now reinforced with an extra leg for stability, it’s ready for another spin. Are you?

The low-seated armchairs are finally back. And they work just as well today as they did in the 1960s.

Old souls in new suits

At the end of the 1960s, life at home was supposed to be relaxed and cosy, with soft rugs, comfortable seating and coffee tables with enough room for snacks. Now you can furnish your home with reclined armchairs, spacious side tables and high pile rugs that meet the expectations of today.

Treat yourself to new dimensions

While some landed on the moon in 1969, others landed in this spacious, soft, slightly reclined armchair designed by Gillis Lundgren. The dimensions of the SOTENÄS armchair are as generous now as they were back then, giving you plenty of room for different sitting positions. Or for sharing it with a friend.

When we bring back an already brilliant design and still manage to improve it slightly, then we’ve succeeded.

Pepper with patterns

Although colourless, the STRECKFLY fabric in salt and pepper has plenty of flavour. This fun monochromatic pattern by Sven Fristedt was first brought into the IKEA range as MYRTEN in 1968. This year, dress up your sofa with easily matched cushion covers or drape your walls in the 3-metre pre-cut fabric.

If asked to design a new vase, I would have started from scratch. With SKOGSTUNDRA I could begin where my old design left off and improve it.
