How does trailer rental work at IKEA?
The first 3 hours are free when you pick up the trailer directly on the spot. If you want to make sure it is available when you arrive, you can reserve it in the Freetrailer app for NOK 49. Download the app, find a pick-up location near you, and unlock the trailer with your phone.
Freetrailer manages the trailer rental
Do I need to buy something to rent a trailer?
No, there is no purchase required. You rent the trailer directly in the Freetrailer app and can pick it up without having shopped at IKEA first.
Requirements for your car and driving licence
You need a category B driving licence and a tow bar on your car. The combined weight of the car and trailer cannot exceed 3,500 kg. If you are unsure how much your car can tow, you can check with the trailer calculator from Statens vegvesen.
How to rent a trailer
- Download and register in the Freetrailer app.
- Turn on Bluetooth and location services on your phone.
- Find a pick-up location and reserve if you want to secure a trailer.
- Drive to the pick-up location and unlock the trailer with the app.
- Return the trailer to the same location and register the return in the app.
Free rental and reservation
The first 3 hours are free when you pick up directly on the spot. If you reserve in the app for NOK 49, the trailer is waiting for you when you arrive. On weekends and other busy periods, it is worth reserving in advance.

- 3-hour rental: Free
- Reservation fee: NOK 49
- Optional extra insurance: NOK 69 per rental period
- Additional rental period: NOK 99 for each additional 3-hour period
- Maximum price per 24 hours: NOK 389 (excluding insurance and reservation fee)
Insurance and excess
All trailers come with basic insurance. Without extra insurance, you will have an excess of NOK 7,500 if something happens. If you add Freetrailer's extra insurance for NOK 69, the excess is reduced to NOK 0. The insurance does not apply if the damage is caused by negligence or if the damage was done intentionally. Extending and maximum rental period
You can extend your rental directly in the app. Do it at least 1 hour before you plan to return the trailer to avoid a fee. You can rent for up to 10 consecutive days. Each day you get one free 3-hour rental period, and pay NOK 99 for each additional 3-hour period beyond that.
Return and drop-off
Return the trailer to the same pick-up location and register the return in the app. It needs to be back where you picked it up, so it is ready for the next customer. You will receive a return receipt by email, usually within 10 minutes. If you have not received it within one hour, contact Freetrailer.
Problems with booking or availability
During busy periods like Fridays and Saturdays, trailers can be fully booked. This is either because other customers have reserved them, or because a trailer is out for repair. Check the app to see if there is a free trailer at another pick-up location nearby. You can also try again after 2 pm, as many customers return their trailers early in the day. If the trailer is not there when you arrive, you can wait a little since many customers return earlier than planned. If you still have problems, contact Freetrailer support.
Change or cancel a reservation
You can change your reservation up until 30 minutes before pick-up. It is possible to change the date, time and pick-up location, as long as there is space. If you want to cancel, you can do so up until pick-up time. The reservation fee is non-refundable, but you can move the reservation to another day at no extra cost.
Damage at pick-up or during rental
If you notice damage when you pick up the trailer, take photos and send them to Freetrailer with your order number. They will check whether the damage was already there and make a note of it. If something happens during the rental, follow the instructions in the app and contact Freetrailer. They will help you assess the damage and handle the insurance.
Size and capacity
It is an enclosed box trailer with double rear doors that open fully. You get full access to the entire loading space and can stack all the way to the roof. The trailer is well suited for larger furniture, sofas and flat-pack items from IKEA.
