A sustainable everyday

More and more people want to reduce their impact on the planet, but many aren’t sure where to start. At IKEA, we believe small actions add up—so we focus on affordable, everyday solutions that help you save energy, water, and reduce waste. As optimists, we tackle big environmental challenges with practical, people-sized ideas, from plant-rich food options to energy-efficient products for your home. Creating a better everyday life for the many means transforming our business and value chain too, reducing our climate footprint while empowering you to live more sustainably.

The IKEA Sustainability Strategy

We have big goals for 2030. We are dedicated to doing our part to reduce climate change, nature loss, unsustainable consumption, and inequality. Our three major focus areas are Healthy & sustainable living, Climate, Nature & circularity and Fair & equal.

Healthy & sustainable living

We will offer products where environmental and social impact as well as circular capabilities have been considered. We will also offer products and services that can directly support a healthy and sustainable lifestyle in, for example, the areas of energy, water, air, waste and food. We will inspire behaviours that lead to a reduced environmental footprint as well as better health and wellbeing at home.

Climate, nature & circularity

We are transitioning towards a circular business built on clean, renewable energy and regenerative resources, de-coupling virgin non-renewable material use from our growth. The aim is to end our dependency on virgin non-renewable materials and fossil fuels. We will contribute to limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5C, in line with the Paris agreement, by reducing emissions in line with science, removing and storing carbon through forestry, agriculture and products as well as contributing with additional reductions in society. We will also do our part to contribute to clean air, water and improved biodiversity.

Fair & equal

By 2030, our ambition is to play our part in contributing to a fair and equal society by respecting and promoting human rights across the value chain and contributing to resilient societies. We recognise our responsibility to address the negative impacts of our business and will always seek to create a positive impact for people. We will provide and support decent and meaningful work, including providing and promoting a living wage and ensuring a just transition. We will ensure that the IKEA business contributes to a more equal, diverse and inclusive society, through our business practices as well as our products, services and communication. We will also use our size and influence to advocate for a fair and equal society.

Energy & resources

Being a large business comes with large responsibilities. Thus, we’re busy making more from less, recycling, turning waste into resources and protecting our nature. For us, choosing materials is about making responsible decisions. When we’re not able to use renewable resources, we aim for recycled or recyclable ones.

Climate & environment

To make the planet a safer and healthier place for generations to come, we are transforming our business and value chain to reduce our climate footprint. This applies to every aspect of what we do, from the way we source energy and materials to how we design our products.

Did you know?

  • Striving for circularity, we design all our new products to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured and finally recycled.
  • Switching from wood to paper pallets reduced our footprint of transporting IKEA products by 75,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
  • We have switched our entire lighting range to energy-efficient LED since 2015.
  • We have removed all single-use plastic products from our home furnishing range globally since 2020.
  • We have removed non-rechargeable alkaline batteries from the range since 2022.
We will inspire and enable people to move towards healthy and sustainable lifestyles, by making them a choice that is affordable, attractive, and accessible for as many people as possible.
