"Home idea with IKEA". A small kitchen with a twist

“Home idea with IKEA” visits a small apartment where long-awaited kitchen transformations are finally taking place. After a year spent with a temporary kitchen without a sink, the homeowner’s goal was to create a fully functional and comfortable kitchen in a limited space, while also preserving the wood-burning stove. The biggest challenge was the layout, but creative solutions and even technical mishaps were successfully overcome. As a result, the small kitchen has gained a new lease on life – becoming functional, well thought-out and perfectly suited to everyday needs.

Before

Before the makeover, the kitchen was only a makeshift space for everyday needs. Various freestanding tables, open shelves and temporary storage solutions served basic functions, but there was a lack of both order and a comfortable work area. The limited space and unclear layout made daily cooking difficult, and the room felt more like a temporary storage area than a cosy kitchen.

After: tips for or

After the makeover, the small kitchen has gained a clear and well-thought-out layout, with a dedicated place for each zone. The design is linear, making maximum use of the wall length on both sides of the kitchen to provide a comfortable work surface, efficient storage and easy movement in the narrow space. All essential elements – the hob, sink, worktop and appliances — are within easy reach, making everyday cooking simple and intuitive. The kitchen is no longer a compromise, but a fully functional space tailored to a small footprint and everyday needs.

After: storage and organising

After the makeover, special attention in the small kitchen has been given to storage. In compact spaces, it’s especially important to make the most of vertical space, which is why full-height wall cabinets were chosen to provide more room for dishes, food supplies and appliances. Closed cabinets help maintain a clean, uncluttered look, while open wall shelves allow easy access to items used every day. Storage solutions are placed both above and below the worktop, freeing up the work area and creating an organised, functional kitchen where everything has its place.

Tips for better order

To make a small kitchen comfortable for everyday use, internal organisers and well-planned waste sorting play an essential role. Drawer inserts help keep cutlery and small kitchen tools neatly arranged, making them easy to see and quick to find. Cabinet interiors are also used smartly — pull-out solutions allow convenient access to both stored items and waste sorting bins. These organisation solutions help maintain order, save time and make everyday cooking simpler and more enjoyable.

Additional organising

Additional storage solutions help maintain order beyond cabinets and drawers. Open wall shelves make it easy to store frequently used items while keeping the space feeling lighter and more open. Portable organisers on the worktop bring small items together in one place and can be moved easily when needed. These solutions are especially useful in small kitchens – helping to keep everything visible, free up the work surface and maintain everyday order with minimal effort.

In small kitchens, the most common mistakes are poorly planned appliance placement, insufficient storage space and forgotten lighting. To create a fully functional and comfortable kitchen, it’s recommended to use cabinets with drawers, full-height wall cabinets, as well as shelf inserts and organisers. Tall cabinets help provide extra storage and conceal wall imperfections, while good-quality lighting and careful planning ensure the kitchen works well for everyday use.
