Home idea with IKEA: a multifunctional living room for a family

The bright, light-filled living room of this family home is ready for a makeover to transform it into a multifunctional space where everyone can feel comfortable – whether spending time together or enjoying some solitude. While the room is already cozy, the family desires more color and greater functionality, as it serves as a place to eat, play, watch TV, and relax. Interior designer Rēzija suggests practical solutions to enhance both the room's aesthetics and comfort.

Before

The bright yet relatively small space has been a challenge for the owners for quite some time. Their quest for the perfect furniture has led to constant rearranging, but a final, satisfying solution has yet to be found. Functionality is also lacking – there's currently no proper seating for guests, and watching TV requires looking across the dining table.

After

Interior designer Rēzija has crafted a cozy and functional living room tailored to a family's needs. A spacious pull-out sofa ensures comfortable seating for everyone, offers ample space for overnight guests, and includes additional storage for belongings. She has also cleverly utilized the wall space, incorporating shelves not only for decorative items but also to provide extra storage, maximizing both style and practicality.

Accent wall for a more colourful everyday life

Since the owners desired more color in the room but painting all the walls would have made the space feel too heavy, the designer opted for a bold accent in the corner, adding a vibrant touch to the entire room. The bright hue highlights the striking display cabinet, perfect for showcasing crockery. An ornate framed mirror adds an elegant and sophisticated touch, creating a beautiful contrast with the simplicity of the other furniture and decor, making each piece stand out.

Storage in a multifunctional space

Since the family uses the same room for both dining and relaxing, it was essential to find space for a large dining table, as well as cupboards for storage to help keep the room tidy. The designer selected a foldable table that can be extended when needed and strategically positioned it to visually separate the dining area from the seating space. To maximize storage, the full height of the wall was utilized, incorporating spacious cabinets to hold all the family's essentials. The BESTÅ collection is the perfect solution, adapting to every space and every need.

Decorations for more personality

Various interior objects stand out beautifully against light, monochrome walls, where the neutral backdrop acts as a cohesive element. In this room, the designer opted for dark shelves to display a variety of decorative items, but the focal point is a collage of framed images. This artful arrangement brings the shelf display to life and infuses the room with personality, as the images feature motifs that hold special meaning for the owners.

"In a city apartment, it’s essential to consider air quality, especially in the rooms where you spend the most time. This includes the living room, making an air purifier a valuable addition to remove particles and gaseous pollutants, ensuring you can breathe more easily and freely."
