Home idea with IKEA: a kitchen for everyday and for guests
A home in Liepāja has been longing for a kitchen makeover. When the owners first moved in, they furnished the space with hand-me-down pieces from friends. Now, however, they dream of creating something uniquely their own – fresh, functional, and designed to reflect their style. The current kitchen is a blank canvas, waiting for the creative vision of an interior designer to transform it into the heart of a home – a space where the family can share moments together and warmly welcome friends.
Before
Previously, the kitchen in this house occupied a different space and served only as a temporary solution. Now, the owners have prepared a proper area equipped with all the necessary utilities, ready for thoughtful planning and setup. The space is relatively compact, making it essential to design the interior with care to ensure there is ample storage while maintaining a layout that supports a comfortable daily routine.
After
The transformation has completely redefined the character of the space. IKEA interior designer Jana opted for glossy white kitchen fronts that beautifully reflect light, enhancing the room's brightness. A serene palette of soft blue and warm sand provides the perfect backdrop, highlighting the white furniture and ensuring a seamless, harmonious flow into the adjoining living area. The new kitchen design offers ample storage, a cozy dining nook, and stylish furnishings that lend the space a touch of personality and sophistication.
Storage tips & tricks for a small kitchen
Given the kitchen's compact size, the interior designer opted for solutions that maximize storage while maintaining an open and airy feel. To prevent the space from feeling overly heavy, a combination of cupboards and open shelving was selected, allowing frequently used items to be conveniently displayed and easily accessible. Practical additions like hanging racks and magnetic holders efficiently utilize wall space for utensils and everyday essentials. Kitchen trolleys, a staple in many modern kitchens, add versatile extra storage while remaining flexible and unobtrusive.
How to obtain more space in the same room
Maximizing cupboard storage becomes much easier when items at the bottom are easily accessible. One of the most practical solutions is to opt for fully pull-out compartments and drawers, allowing you to see and access everything at a glance. If additional storage is needed, consider a versatile trolley. It can hold both small and large items, be conveniently moved to wherever it's needed, and neatly tucked away when not in use.
Dining area between kitchen and living area
In this kitchen, seamlessly integrated with the living area, the design needed to ensure an aesthetically pleasing transition. To achieve this, the designer incorporated a dining area featuring comfortable upholstered chairs that align functionally with the living room furniture. The chair upholstery complements the blue wall, creating a cohesive look. As a focal point, a large artwork in harmonious shades of blue, beige, white, and black adorns the wall. The overall color palette is further enlivened by warm pink tones introduced through the curtains and smaller decor pieces, adding a touch of vibrancy to the space.
Small things for everyday convenience
Since the family in this home enjoys hosting guests, the designer focused on enhancing the space's comfort and functionality for gatherings. Upholstered chairs were chosen, offering a cozy, homely feel while ensuring comfort during long meals or conversations. Thoughtful details, such as a swivel tray for serving side dishes, add a practical and inviting touch, allowing guests to easily help themselves to their favorites. These small yet impactful elements contribute to a warm and welcoming atmosphere for entertaining.
