Life under the garden parasols

The parasol will provide you with cooling shade on your patio or over your garden table. Many of our parasols can be tilted if necessary, so you can get the shade you want. 

A garden parasol can be a good addition to your balcony setup as well. With a south- or eastward facing balcony, you might need the extra cover during the hottest hours of the day. A parasol won't take up too much space and can easily be taken down and folded when you don’t need it.

How to find the right parasol and base

You can either choose a parasol and base separately or buy them together as a complete set. You’ll want to consider the sizing of your outdoor space, the amount of shade you want, and the style of parasol that will complement your outdoor area.

Parasols

There are three types of parasols to choose between. There’s the classic parasol on a stand, with a pole that goes in the middle. This is a common addition to a garden dining set equipped with a parasol hole - a perfect set-up if your outdoor space is restricted, since your outdoor table and parasol will occupy the same space.

If you’d like to control the shade, a freestanding or hanging parasol is a great option. By tilting the parasol according to where the sun is, you can enjoy cooling shade from early morning until sunset.

You can also choose the half parasol and base. This is a parasol and base made to fit the limited space of a balcony or a small patio. Place it along the wall or a balcony rail for safe and shaded lounging during a sunny day.

Cantilever parasol

A hanging garden umbrella or cantilever parasol is a good choice if you want portable protection from the sun. It’s easy to adjust and move wherever you need it, so you’ll always have that nice cooling shade regardless of where the sun is. And you won’t need to make a hole in your outdoor table to use it. 

Parasol bases

Parasol bases support the umbrella. A sturdy base ensures stability and prevents your parasol from flying off if the weather gets rough. But parasol bases are not universal. They come in different shapes and weights, designed to fit specific parameters. After selecting your new parasol, always check the product description to confirm with which base it is compatible.

At IKEA you’ll find garden umbrella bases made from heavy concrete or bases that can be filled with sand to achieve an appropriate weight. Bases do a great job of keeping the parasol stable, however we recommend you fold the parasol when not in use, especially during windy days. Taking proper care of your parasols ensures maximum durability.
