Home visit: a workspace for creative collaboration

The modern way to work is flexible and as much about working from home as the office. Planning a home office? Read on for ideas to make a productive workspace that allows colleagues to join you at your desk.

Put your things in order… A tidy workroom aids focus, and when everything has a home, you’ll always find what you need quickly. Boxes, clip files, cabinets… Pick a mix of organisers in styles and colours you’ll enjoy working with, then get smart with the basics of labelling and putting things you use regularly in the most accessible space.

Have things that inspire you out on show… The advantage of a home office is that you can add the comforts of home. Photos, motivational quotes, notes from your latest project – they can all have a place in your office. If you’re worried they could take over the room, have one space for displays, like the pinboard pictured here.

Match your desk to the way you work… At work, you can feel tied to your desk, but when you work from home, having a desk to go to often helps the mind switch from home life to work life. When picking your desk, think about how you work and tailor the furniture to your needs. The work table in this office is extendable with lots of surface area to spread out creative projects – and colleagues to work together.

Who works in a space like this? Mia Lundström, creative director of Life At Home, IKEA India. ‘We don’t have an IKEA in India yet – I’m part of the IKEA India start-up team. When I relocated here, I had to think hard about what I brought with me. I made space for some very trusty IKEA pieces – IVAR drawers that I put on legs so they stand up to the Indian climate. And NORDEN, a great table that I use as the desk in my office. The team often works together here. It’s good to have a space that works for one or many.’

We love to see our customers get creative with our products. Go for it! But please note that altering or modifying IKEA products so they can no longer be re-sold or used for their original purpose, means the IKEA commercial guarantees and your right to return the products will be lost.
