Airing and vacuuming will help to eliminate the smell that the rug can have when it is new.
Cleaning: Use a mild detergent, brush with a soft brush and rinse thoroughly with water. Let the rug dry completely before use

Do not tumble dry.

Vacuum, shake and rotate the rug regularly.
Dry spots; remove immediately by scraping carefully towards the middle of the spot.

I have this rug in my living room for almost 2 years and it is still in a pretty good condition. My cat sometimes plays with its edges, some fibers comes out because of that, but it's still fluffy.
