Swedish Bite will be first IKEA deli in Japan to sell food by weight

IKEA Retail Japan announced today that IKEA Shinjuku will open on Saturday, May 1 with thorough safety protocols in place.

CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer Helene von Reis said, “We are excited to continue our city expansion with our third city shop in Tokyo, this time in the bustling Shinjuku district. IKEA Shinjuku will offer inspiring solutions for home-furnishing needs at a time when homes have become more important than ever before. In our continuing effort to become climate-neutral, IKEA Shinjuku will offer home furnishings made of sustainable materials that are good for the planet as well as people. Also, many varieties of plant-based food will be served. Warm welcome to IKEA Shinjuku!”

IKEA Shinjuku will display about 1,600 items in total, approximately 1,200 of which will be available for immediate takeaway. Each floor will be devoted to specific room types (living room, bedroom, etc.) and customers will be able to pay for purchases on any floor for extra-easy shopping. In addition, IKEA Shinjuku will introduce an expanded range of seasonally themed displays to help customers enjoy the changing seasons and holidays throughout the year.

IKEA Shinjuku will present six distinctively different room sets covering diverse lifestyles, reflecting IKEA’s respect for diversity in terms of values ​​as well as lifestyles. The room sets will expresses various personas and living arrangements to inspire all customers to enjoy more comfortable and fulfilling lives.

■Circular Shop giving new life to IKEA products
IKEA Shinjuku will open a city-shop-sized Circular Shop section on its first floor to sell recovered products, floor-display items and slightly blemished new products at outlet prices. IKEA, which is deeply committed to the concept of a global circular economy, launched its Circular Hub model in Japan at IKEA Kohoku in this February.

■Japan’s first Swedish Bite to sell food by weight
IKEA Shinjuku’s Swedish Bite will open on Monday, May 17 as the first IKEA food service in Japan to offer takeout deli foods priced by weight. The Scandinavian-influenced menu will include popular items such as plant-base lasagna and shrimp potato salads with dill- mayonnaise. Also, to help reduce global food waste throughout the company, Sweden Bite as well as Swedish Restaurant at IKEA Shibuya will introduce a tool to monitor food waste.

COVID-19 Measures at IKEA Shinjuku

To help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, IKEA Shinjuku will implement the following measures with the highest priority, aiming to ensure the health and safety of customers and co-workers alike:

  • Mask wearing by all co-workers (staffers)
  • Hand washing and disinfecting by all co-workers
  • Measuring body temperatures of all co-workers before work
  • Measuring body temperatures of all customers at shop entrance (planned)
  • Periodic replacement/disinfection of equipment touched by customers
  • Providing in-store disinfection opportunities for customers
  • Shortening business hours to 11: 00-20: 00 (temporarily)

Depending on the evolving situation and in accordance with government guidelines, additional measures may be implemented to ensure the safety and peace of mind of IKEA customers and co-workers.

Online Reservations for Entrance by Assigned Number

To manage store capacity during the pandemic, online reservations for store entrance will be accepted in advance from 9 pm on Friday, April 30, the day before IKEA Shinjuku opens. The reservation webpage is www.IKEA.jp/shinjuku. Registered customers will be notified via email regarding the time when they may enter the store. Same-day reservations will be possible if space is available, but reservations for any given day will close once capacity is reached. Entrance numbers will be assigned in the order of registration. IKEA Shinjuku will operate the online reservation system for the time being.
