I'm not sure how others use it, but if you place the books as weights on the small end it will work just fine. Haven't had any trouble, holds a row of cookingbooks fine.

Decided this guy was too cute to be hidden on a shelf! He now sits on a window sill, watching the world go by and providing a lovely silhouette I can see from two rooms. Love him!
