Tempered glass is 4-5 times stronger and more resistant to breaking than regular glass. In case it would break, it shatters into many granular pieces to reduce the risk of injury.

This is amazing we use it for extra can goods and over flow from the kitchen cabinets. Very sturdy I added casters to the bottom so I can move it around freely in the kitchen to use it for extra counter space when needed.
