Getting the best from a wardrobe

Thinking about a new wardrobe? Or how to make the most of the one you have? Here are some tips about wardrobe organisation so you can always pick out the right outfit. Or at least realise a lot quicker that you have nothing to wear.

What size should you go for?

If you’re getting a new wardrobe, then probably the first thing to consider is what size you want. It’s good to think about how much you have to store and to measure the space where you’re going to put your wardrobe.

Organising inside – folding

A wardrobe is a big box – it’s how it’s organised inside that helps you see and get at your things. Shelves are great for things that you can fold up and stack – like chunkier sweaters. A drawer can be a perfect, easy access home for your T-shirts – just fold them and put them upright so you see them all at a glance. Clothes boxes inside a drawer mean you can keep things like socks or belts together so you can find them super fast.

Organising inside – hanging

Hanging things like shirts, dresses and jackets means fewer wrinkles and gives you a good overview so you can see what you have and get some outfit inspiration. You can arrange your clothes by type – all jackets together and so on. Or by colour, which makes things look calmer – especially helpful if you have an open wardrobe.

Hanging works for accessories, too

Hanging them up is an easy to see, easy to get at and space-saving way to store things like scarves, ties and accessories.

See you all next year

Boxes in your wardrobe are great for keeping seasonal clothes out of your way until you need them again. They keep the dust off and this box even has little ventilation nets to let air circulate to help your things stay fresh.

There’s more space on top

You can turn the top of your wardrobe into organised storage with some boxes. Go for ones that blend in with your wardrobe if you want to keep things looking calm.

Putting your clothes in the spotlight

Lighting inside or on top of your wardrobe helps you get a better overview of your clothes and find things quicker. Lights on top can also give you a nice, soft background light when they reflect off the closed doors. Plus, if you and your partner get up at different times, the early riser can find their clothes just using these lights, while the other sleeps blissfully on.

Mirrors that give you more

A large mirror is really a dressing area essential. A lot of IKEA wardrobes come with mirror doors and of course you can find plenty of mirrors to put on your wall, too. Or why not go for a standing mirror like here? You can hang tomorrow’s outfit up tonight and sleep a bit longer in the morning or freshen up worn-once clothes by airing them.
