Two Person Build.DeThis takes awhile to build and it is almost impossible to put together without another person. One holds the Ivar steady checking the Spirit Level the other screws in the Cross Brace. Yes you need a small Spirit Level. No there are no pilot holes to affix the cross brace at the back. You may need to use a tiny drill bit to make pilot holes to attach the cross brace (make sure the drill bit is smaller then the screws). Or use a power drill as some of the pine is too hard to screw by hand without pilot holes. If you slightly dent the wood put a drop of clean water on the dent. This can help to swell the wood back into shape. All in all this is pretty easy to build and they are strong and sturdy when built.
