New Zealand homes commonly have a dedicated entrance area and taking shoes off in the entry is a Kiwi habit influenced by the weather as many want to avoid bringing the dirt in. However, when shoes are dropped off, so are keys, hats, coats, bags and strollers. With no obvious place to go, items often end up on the ground or inconveniently stowed in a different room.
The homes we spoke with often said they wanted to create entryways that give a warm and welcoming impression for people coming into the home.
