IKEA for business: Bonava co-working space

The project within the co-working space was an unusual one and required the designers to carefully consider how best to shape the interior and divide the space into functional zones. The space includes a kitchen and a work area with desks, which can also be transformed into a venue for celebrations and social gatherings. Near the entrance, space was allocated for a practical cloakroom area, while further inside there is a relaxation corner with sofas for quieter moments and informal leisure. The main challenge was to make the dark semi-basement space feel bright and welcoming, while also achieving a sense of visual lightness. An additional difficulty was presented by the communication pipes and technical units already present within the space, which were integrated into the interior as much as possible in order to maintain a cohesive and aesthetically harmonious overall appearance.

About the project

Developing the interior design project for the apartment building was not an easy task. The premises are located in the basement and initially had a strong “basement feel” to them. The aim was to transform them into a bright, cheerful, cosy, and stylish environment where people could come to work. The space also needed to be multifunctional – incorporating a small kitchen area, a relaxation zone, and the flexibility to be adapted into a communal or event space when required.

To reduce noise within the space and create an environment more suitable for focused work, acoustic divider screens have been incorporated throughout the interior. Comfortable workstations have been arranged alongside these partitions, while tables placed against the wall provide areas where people can sit down together and discuss projects and tasks.

Enough space for everything

The work area is separated from the relaxation zone by a divider with integrated plant boxes, creating a lively and fresh accent within the space while also helping to define the different areas more clearly. For lighting in spaces such as this, track lighting with adjustable spotlights works particularly well, allowing the direction of light to be adapted as needed. A muted palette of warm tones makes the basement space feel cosy while also giving it a sense of lightness.

A practical kitchen area has been created along one wall. As the primary function of the space is to serve as a comfortable working environment, the kitchen design has been kept minimal and understated, with storage solutions that allow smaller items to be concealed in order to avoid unnecessary visual clutter, while still incorporating all the elements required for a modern kitchen area.
