IKEA for business: Allaži Primary School

The after-school space at Allaži Primary School was in need of a fresh new lease of life. This is where pupils spend time after lessons, and the requirements for the new interior were particularly ambitious – the room needed to comfortably accommodate a large number of children while offering quieter areas for relaxation, spaces for playing and socialising with friends, as well as a dedicated study zone.

About the project

The project “After Lessons – Just Like Home!” at Allaži Primary School began as an initiative led by parents, with funding raised through a public donation campaign. As part of the project, a previously rather uninviting room furnished only with tables and chairs was completely renovated, featuring a beautiful mural created by an artist as well as an entirely new interior furnished by IKEA. The renewed space now provides ample room for studying, playing, and quieter relaxation alike – achieved through thoughtful zoning and the use of different furniture solutions to separate the various areas.

As the room’s windows face south, the original idea of using beige and light coffee tones to create a cosy atmosphere was abandoned, as the sunlight would have made the palette appear overly yellow and saturated. In addition, the existing orange blinds were intended to remain, which would have intensified the effect even further.

Instead, muted green tones were chosen as an alternative, helping to create a calm, pleasant, and harmonious atmosphere without making the space feel overly bright or overpowering.

The intended zoning of the room was successfully achieved, with dedicated areas created for studying, play, relaxation, and creative activities.

Enough space for everything

The thoughtfully planned layout and harmonious colour palette allow the space to feel bright and spacious, making it a pleasant environment to spend time in every day. Houseplants in soft green tones provide subtle accents throughout the interior.

In designing this space, it was important that the children would no longer feel as though they were still at school, but instead be able to mentally switch into a more relaxed and comfortable state. This was achieved not only through thoughtful zoning, but also through various playful elements introduced into the interior – such as the mural, which immediately draws attention and creates a vibrant focal point, as well as the brightly coloured sofa covers and seating furniture. Although these pieces were not specifically matched to one another, together they create a cohesive and harmonious overall look.
