“Home idea with IKEA”: Family and Child Welfare Centre makeovers
Meet the heroes of this week
This week, we’re visiting a very special place: the Children’s Support Unit at Klaipėda City Family and Child Welfare Centre, which provides temporary accommodation for children who can no longer live safely at home. Together with our interior designers, we brought warmth and life to the newly renovated but still empty spaces, creating two bedrooms and a shared meeting room where children can spend time with loved ones, play or simply sit down for a quiet chat.
Interior designer‘s task:
- Turn completely empty spaces into welcoming, liveable rooms.
- Create a safe environment for children, filled with warmth and colour.
- Design bedrooms suitable for residents of all ages, from children to adults.
- Choose flexible solutions and plan versatile storage that younger children can easily reach.
- Make room for spending time together, relaxing and playing in the compact meeting room.
Spot the transformation!
Bedrooms and hallway
A space for residents of all ages
As the rooms accommodate people of different ages, the SMÅSTAD storage system was chosen to provide space not only for clothes but also for toys, drawing and writing materials, and other personal belongings. The interiors of the wardrobes are arranged so that both adults and children can reach their belongings easily. Clothes rails and shelves are positioned at different heights, allowing younger residents to take out and put away their things independently.
A place for everything
As the people staying in the rooms change, boxes and shelves are labelled with clear words or pictures. This makes it easier to understand where everything belongs, find items quickly and keep the rooms tidy.
A single or double bed?
There is no need to choose: the extendable SLÄKT day-bed serves as a sofa during the day and can be turned into a bed of the required size at night. Two spacious drawers beneath the seat provide convenient storage for bed linen, duvets and pillows. It is an excellent choice when space is limited.
Different furniture, one harmonious look
Each piece of furniture was selected according to the purpose it needs to serve. Although the furniture comes from different ranges, complementary colours, simple shapes and similar materials bring everything together. As a result, the rooms feel calm and cohesive.
Smart solutions for the hallway
The narrow hallway has been furnished with compact, space-saving pieces: a shoe cabinet, coat rack and wall-mounted mirror. The mirror reflects light and helps the small space feel brighter and more spacious.

Colourful details
Textiles and colourful accents make the room feel warm and welcoming. A rug with a mix of long and short pile feels soft underfoot and adds texture and character to the space. Accessories from the GREJSIMOJS collection invite children to get creative, play and spend time together.
Play corner
The TROFAST storage system and FLISAT wall shelves provide practical storage for children’s toys. Open boxes make everything easy to find and just as easy to put away afterwards. And when tidying up is this simple, children can join in too.
Safety comes first
Every detail matters in a shared space. That’s why the frames used here have lightweight plastic fronts rather than glass. Drawings and photographs look just as lovely, but there are no glass shards to worry about if a frame is accidentally dropped or broken.
There's even a kitchen
The METOD kitchen system offers plenty of choice when planning cabinets, drawers and interior fittings. Different combinations can be adapted to suit the available space, everyday needs and budget.

“Since 2020, IKEA has been running the “Notice Violence” initiative, renovating spaces that provide temporary accommodation for families affected by domestic violence. So far, we have transformed 70 spaces, covering more than 1,000 square metres, at crisis centres in Vilnius and Kaunas. Our co-workers have played an important part too, with 350 volunteers assembling furniture, laying rugs, hanging pictures and helping to create a homely environment.”
