Climate action IKEA Japan takes

IKEA is committed to halve our GHG emission through our value chain by 2030 compared to our baseline year 2016, and reach net zero by 2050 at latest.

Operated by 100% renewable electricity since 2018

IKEA Japan has not only installed solar panels in all IKEA stores (large stores), but also procures 100% renewable electricity for any shortfall. Since 2018, we have welcomed customers with 100% renewable electricity for 364 days a year. Additionally, by working on electrifying equipment, the rate of renewable energy used for store operations is 99.7%.

*At IKEA Shinjuku and IKEA Shibuya, we are sending a signal for the further spread of renewable electricity by purchasing renewable energy certificates equivalent to the annual electricity consumption.

Emission free home delivery

Our next step is to make our home delivery service 100% emission free, to reduce our climate footprint through our store operation.

90% zero-emission delivery services by 2028.

Ingka Group, which IKEA Japan belongs to, aims to achieve 90% zero-emission delivery services in all markets by 2028. In cities such as Shanghai and Amsterdam, they have already reached nearly 100% zero-emission delivery share.

*Ingka Group, which operates IKEA's retail business in 31 countries and regions including Japan, is IKEA's largest retailer and accounts for approximately 90% of IKEA's retail sales.

The zero-emission delivery rate across Japan is 35%

With the cooperation of business partners handling IKEA's delivery services, we introduced our first two 3-ton EV trucks for IKEA's delivery service operations in June 2020. By March 2025, we have introduced an additional 26 EV trucks. This aims to achieve a 50% zero-emission share of IKEA's delivery services across Japan.

*The percentage of delivery services using EV vehicles as of the end of FY24.

In-house pilot of some deliveries

To further achieve zero emissions and improve customer satisfaction, we are conducting a trial where part of the delivery service is handled in-house. Currently, seven EV light vehicles are in operation at IKEA Yokohama and IKEA Shin Misato.
