Zero emission IKEA deliveries

At IKEA, we have committed to cutting carbon emissions in all stages of our value chain.  As a result, Ingka Group – the biggest IKEA franchisee – is aiming for more than 90% of deliveries globally, to be delivered by electric vehicles (EV) or other IKEA zero-emission solutions by 2028.

By promoting the use of EVs for home deliveries, we want to improve the local environment around our stores and act as a good neighbour. With this we hope to see healthier cities, and a healthier climate.

The road ahead

To inspire the shift to zero emission deliveries, Ingka Group set an ambitious target back in 2018 to reach 100% zero emissions deliveries by 2025. However, the road to 100% zero emissions deliveries has not always been smooth.

Charging infrastructure for electric vehicles has not accelerated as quickly as hoped, and the COVID-19 pandemic greatly affected the availability of EV vehicles. We faced challenges in remote locations, where vehicle range combined with the weight of our products slowed us down. By September 2024, 41.1% of retail home deliveries fulfilled by Ingka Group were made by zero emission vehicles, up from 24.6% the previous year.  To reflect the learnings and current progress, Ingka Group has reformulated its goal to achieve more than 90% of home deliveries made by zero-emissions vehicles by 2028.

This goal will continue to build on the ambition and momentum of the first target whilst being achievable and realistic. The aim will always be to go beyond 90% but the gap to 100% represents the uncertainty that will always remain when delivering to customers, such as lack of chargers in remote locations and possible vehicle breakdowns that require replacement by a non-EV vehicle at short notice to deliver our customers products as promised.

IKEA zero-emissions, what’s our approach?

Our methodology for achieving zero-emission deliveries involves:

Localisations

Identifying and adopting technologies and fuels suitable for the local infrastructure.

Collaborations

Collaborating closely with local authorities, partners, and communities to create an enabling environment for zero-emission logistics.

Reporting

Regularly monitoring and transparently reporting our progress to ensure accountability.

Reaching our IKEA emission reduction goals

Ingka Group is making significant progress globally towards achieving zero-emission deliveries:

  • We have come a long way since we set the target in 2018. Already in 2019 Shanghai became the first city where 100% of our home deliveries are transported by EV vehicles and today we have 100% zero-emission home deliveries across 20 cities, in 300+ locations and more than 2500+ electric vehicles are in operation globally.
  • Our latest forecast shows that we are making good progress towards the goal or reaching 100% zero emission deliveries, with some continued challenges. However, we expect significant progress to be made in 2024/2025 due to gains we have made within charging infrastructure in the last year, and new policies coming into place which allow for heavier electric light commercial vehicles in many countries.
  • We are working to more rapidly roll out zero emission vehicles through additional investments in vehicles and charging infrastructure, piloting new innovations and collaborating with other industry players. These actions include collaborating with truck manufacturers to test new EVs, investing in charging infrastructure, and advocating for policy changes to overcome regulatory barriers.

Local actions

  • All trucks used for IKEA's in-house delivery are electric vehicles.
  • Among the delivery companies handling IKEA's deliveries, 28 EV trucks are in operation nationwide.
