MUROTO base 55
Welcoming glamping guests to MUROTO base 55
Muroto is a city on a green, lush island in southern Japan. Although appreciated for its pristine, mountainous surroundings, few visitors stay the night. The problem: scarce accommodation restricts longer sojourns. The solution: MUROTO base 55.
"Muroto is known for its beautiful location, and there's no shortage of tourists coming here. But we felt we needed to improve people's chances to stay overnight," says Tatsunori Kuroiwa, administrator at MUROTO base 55. "To highlight our closeness to nature, we aimed for a glamping site. Besides being fairly simple to construct, it's a solution that offers comfortable, affordable accommodation to visitors."

A unique experience in a unique place
Establishing MUROTO base 55 is a project included in an ongoing regional campaign for tourism promotion. "Muroto city has its own UNESCO Global Geopark, so we're clearly not alone in thinking Muroto is worth a stop," Tatsunori continues.
The site used to be an inn for bike riders, but was about to be closed due to aging. With MUROTO base 55 now in place, urban guests can enjoy Muroto’s nature through glamping, i.e. the booming crossover mix of camping and hotel lodging.
"Together with IKEA, we used their range to the fullest to develop different styles for each container room. This makes for a unique experience, and guests have truly taken to the concept. All in all, I think it's a promising start to further promoting the appeal of Muroto, both nationwide and overseas."
