Choosing house plants to brighten up your room

All neat and tidy, everything in its place, your room seems perfect... but something is missing? If your home decor is lacking, try adding house plants. A plant can make a transform even the most familiar spaces. Try it today! Let's look at how to choose house plants and where to put them.

01 Find the focal point

The key to making the most of a plant is location. Particularly for large, impressive house plants, think about where you can put it to maximise its effect on the room.

  • To find a good spot, start by looking the focal point of your living space. The focal point is where your eyes first fall in the room.
  • When you open the door you see the item placed at the focal point first, so it creates your first impression of the room as a whole.
  • Putting a fresh green plant at the focal point makes the room feel refreshing and comfortable

Here's how to find the focal point. Standing at the entrance to the room, what do you see when you look straight ahead? If there's a wall, that's the focal point. If there's a window, see if your eyes go to the wall on the left or right more readily. Use that side as the focal point.

02 Where to put house plants

Once you've found the focal point, choose a plant. Then think about where to put it based on its size.

Large plants make rooms feel more spacious

  1. If you want to emphasise the size of your living room when someone comes through the door, choose a large house plant and place it effectively.
  2. The more striking an object, the more it draws the eye to the focal point. A plant about 1 m tall is not too high or low compared to other items in the room and so will have the right effect.

Try placing a large plant in the far corner as you look from the doorway towards the focal point wall. When you open the door, your eyes will naturally be drawn to it. The plant attracts your gaze inside the room and, like an optical illusion, makes it feel bigger than it actually is.

Make sure that the line of sight to the plant is not blocked by furniture. Try placing smaller items closer and larger ones farther away, for example a coffee table, sofa and then a large house plant. This is an effective way to draw the eye towards the plant.

Make the most of this illusion by choosing the right plant. A plant with lots of leaves at the top (especially when higher than your line of sight) attracts the eye more strongly, making the illusion stronger. A PACHIRA AQUATICA, FICUS BENJAMINA or other plant with lots of foliage above the normal line of sight draws the eye upwards and gives a feeling of depth. Large plants also retain water better than smaller plants, so they're surprisingly easy to care for. If you want something easy to look after, try a PACHIRA AQUATICA. FICUS BENJAMINA has beautiful, delicate leaves but is also sensitive to temperature changes so it needs a bit more care. Both of these trees thrive in bright places with indirect sunlight, for example rooms with sunlight coming in through curtains. Complement a beautiful standing plant such as a PACHIRA AQUATICA or FICUS BENJAMINA with a pot cover in a neutral colour like white, black or grey. This stylish touch helps the tree stand out even more. Covering the earth in the pot with mulch prevents drying and helps it blend in with your interior. Use white pebbles for a refined look, or bark chips or peat moss for a natural finishing touch.

Raise your sights

If you choose a small to medium-sized house plant, think of ways to make it look taller.

  1. Lift up medium-sized house plants by putting them on a side table or flower stand to get the same effect as a larger plant.
  2. Unusual plants with interesting leaf shapes are full of character. For example, a MONSTERA with its cut-out leaves gives a room an East Asian look. Unique plants like this one stand out regardless of their size.
  3. Raise up small plants by putting them on shelves or on top of cupboards, adding some variety to your room. You can also put an ivy plant in a hanging pot and suspend it from the ceiling, or put it on a shelf and let it drape down like a curtain. There are so many ways to make your space more appealing!

The BOTANISK collection features a wide range of items that help put your plants on display. One is a fabric tool store woven from natural banana fibres. It's meant to hold gardening supplies, but can also display plants with dangling leaves, such as ivy, pothos or string-of-pearls.

Put the plant pots into the pockets and then just attach the fabric to a wall hook or pole for an easy hanging display. Artificial plants are lightweight and have no earth to spill, so can be safely put anywhere.

Small but mighty

Why restrict plants to the living room? Choose a few attractive small plants, like succulents and cacti, and line them up on your kitchen cabinets. If you've chosen a natural look for your home, add life by scattering plants everywhere. You can also space them out evenly in a more modern style.

Artificial plants, infinite possibilities

Even if you want plants to liven up your home, chances are there are some places that don't get much light. Sinks, toilets and hallways can have little natural light, making them a black spot for plants, even though they're exactly the places that most need a plant to brighten them up.

The answer is artificial plants. The FEJKA collection is so well-made, down to the finest detail, you can't tell if they're real or fake until you get close. Unless you really look, you'll probably assume they're real. If you don't have time to look after plants, artificial ones need no care. And since they need no earth or water, they're ideal not just for dark corners but also for daring wall displays.

Put up some wall mounted artificial plants from the FEJKA collection to create a luscious natural green wall.Mix and match FEJKA plants with different pot covers to add a touch of style. Even a simple tin can will make them look different. For a shady area next to the sink, consider a clean, bright white ceramic pot cover.

For wall art, use several wall-mounted artificial plants for a bigger splash of colour. Or combine them with framed pictures or photos to create your own composite artwork. Keep everything inside a rectangle for a beautifully symmetrical composition.

03 One plant, two benefits

Plants are said to purify the air, and people feel soothed and calm in spaces full of greenery. This is apparently caused by plants releasing a substance known as phytoncide into the air.

Maybe that's why the air feels fresher with a few house plants. Just looking at beautiful green plants gives you a boost.Plants are also a great way to add style to your rooms. Whether it's adding a tropical note to a natural interior or a green oasis to a modern industrial theme, the way you use house plants will bring new colour to your living space. Plants have the power to take your room to a whole new level.

04 Rooms love plants

A room with a touch of living green soothes the eye and the heart. Careful placement of house plants brings more style to your living space, while also making them even more relaxing to be in. Real or artificial, try adding an easy touch of green to your everyday life.
