Should wall sconces face up or down?

Whether you should mount your wall sconce lamp with the light casting upwards or downwards depends on the purpose the lighting will serve, and your desired aesthetic.

• For reading in bed, doing homework at your desk or working on anything that requires task lighting, it’s best to use downlighting for bright focused light. Consider where you’ll be standing, sitting or leaning when using the wall lamp and position it appropriately to perfectly illuminate the area.
• Depending on the effect you’d like to achieve for things like trophy cases, artwork or photography, wall sconce lights can be placed above or below any of your cherished pieces. Multiple wall mounted lamps can also be positioned in alignment above or below larger focal areas, such as living room gallery walls.
• Uplighting is generally recommended for lighting high ceilings, particularly when attractive structures such as decorative wooden arches or beams would otherwise be lost in shadow.
