How do induction hobs work?

Once turned on, induction hobs use an electromagnetic field to transfer currents to the induction-compatible cookware placed on their flat surface. Rather than heating the pot or pan with a heat source from below—as is done with the flame of a gas hob, for example—induction stovetops work in harmony with the cookware itself to generate heat and cook your food, resulting in less energy loss.

Do portable induction hobs require special cookware?

Because of how induction stoves function, they require that you use ferrous—or iron-containing—flat-based pots and pans. Love your current pots and pans, and want to ensure they'll work with an induction stove top before committing? Many induction-compatible cookware pieces will have an induction logo on the bottom of the pot or pan—this looks a bit like a coil or corkscrew. Don't see the logo? You can also check if your cookware is magnetic by holding a magnet to the bottom. If it firmly sticks, your cookware is magnetic and will likely work well with an induction stove.  Shop IKEA 365+ cookware for pots and pans that are fully compatible with induction hobs!

Flexible zones help extend your cooking capabilities

In our selection of induction cooktops you'll find a variety of models with different functionalities. Models with the bridging function allows you to connect two cooking zones into one larger one. You can vary the cooking surface by using the flexible heating zones together or separately, perfect for when using oversized or odd-size pots or pans.

If you have a smaller cooking area but still want an innovative solution with the latest technology, we recommend a portable induction hobs. It’s easy to move around and can be stowed away when you're not using it to free up space.

With an induction cooktop you can prepare your meal quickly and safely, with a two-quart pot of pasta water boiling in mere minutes. Induction hobswork by heating your cookware directly, instead of transferring the heat from cooktop to cooking vessel. This results in the surface of induction hobs staying cooler than gas or electric models as the heat flows directly into the base of the cookware.

Quick tips for induction plate first-timers

Induction hobs are known for heating up cookware quickly for time-saving efficiency. But it can take some getting used to! Many things tend to heat up much more quickly on an induction stove, including a pot of water. Because of this speed, we recommend you prepare all the ingredients and chop all the veggies before you heat up the pan. Remember to not heat cookware when it's empty, as it could overheat and become discolored.
