Types of frying pans

Good skillets and frying pans do more for any serious home cook based on what they’re made with. Select pans that combine the durability of stainless steel with the high heat conductivity of a layer of aluminum for fast, even heating. Enjoy even faster heating and a more lightweight skillet with all aluminum skillets that make it easier to regulate heat so food doesn’t burn or stick. Or choose carbon steel frying pans which also spread heat evenly for even browning in a pan that stays warm for a long time.

Find frying pans as small as 5”, which are perfect for frying an egg, or large frying skillets as big as 13”, which can handle a whole fish or sizeable cuts of steak. Frying pan sets, such as one set with 8” and 10” pans, allow you to tackle different size recipes as well as bigger and smaller cuts of fish, meats or vegetables. Choose small and large frying pans with different length handles, angled handles for a comfortable grip and pans with handles on both sides for easier maneuvering. Find many options in oven safe frying pans as well.

Select non-stick frying pans that are suitable for everyday use while taking some of the worry out of cooking. A non-stick lining also means frying with less fat. There are also pans available without a non-stick coating.

Carbon steel–the chef’s frying pan choice

Carbon steel is the perfect option for the more skilled home chef. The carbon steel spreads heat evenly and is perfect for lovingly cooked dishes in the oven or on any type of cooktop. A seasoned carbon steel pan is tasty just like old times—and durable year after year.

Frequently asked questions about frying pans

Which pans are best for frying?

Stainless steel pans that absorb heat well and retain it for a long time. Pans with stainless steel and aluminum that combine to distribute heat evenly and energy efficiently, thus making it easier to regulate the temperature of your frying oil. Carbon steel frying pans, which do all of the above, are another great choice to help you quickly and evenly regulate heat when frying.

What is the difference between a skillet and a frying pan?

Generally speaking, a skillet has slanted sides which help with sautéing and moving ingredients around quickly. At the same time, however, the two terms are frequently used interchangeably.

Can you use a frying pan as a saucepan?

Yes. Start off your sauce by browning vegetables along with meat or fish and then deglaze with wine or stock and go from there on towards building a delicious sauce.
