Redesign your kitchen: How to bring a breath of fresh air into your home

Is your kitchen no longer a good fit? Want to breathe new life into it but don't know where to start? Think it's an IKEA kitchen, but aren't quite sure? Then you've come to the right place!

IKEA will support you in your new project. 3 easy steps to a new kitchen – without a big budget:

Step 1: Take a close look at your current kitchen

Find out if you can renovate your kitchen with IKEA – and what you really need:

  1. How is your kitchen currently set up
  2. What storage solutions do you need

1. How is your kitchen currently set up

Now it's time to plan your kitchen layout.

What no longer fits into your everyday life? Consider what bothers you:

  • The arrangement of your cabinets and appliances
  • Open or closed kitchen?
  • Place to eat or a bar?

Also consider water and electrical connections. These determine where certain elements can be placed—or whether you need to adjust something.

Our tip: Plan your kitchen directly in the 3D kitchen planner or use our template to draw a sketch of your current kitchen—including all connections and special features.

This will give you a solid foundation for your project—or for a consultation with our kitchen experts.

The work zones in your kitchen

Also consider your current workspaces—and how you might be able to improve them. The ideal kitchen is divided into three zones to ensure everything runs smoothly:

  • Storage
    (refrigerator, freezer, pantry)
  • Washing & Cleaning
    (sink, dishwasher)
  • Cooking & Baking
    (stove, oven, hob)

Learn about the kitchen triangle to plan as efficiently as possible.

2. What storage solutions do you need

Also get an idea of what you are missing in your everyday life – and how you can improve your storage space.

Tips

  • Get more out of your existing furniture:
Can you add additional drawers or shelves?
  • Use unused space cleverly:
    • Free walls
    • A kitchen island in the middle
    • Additional wall shelves or hanging cabinets
    • A mobile serving station (desserts)

Now you know your actual kitchen renovation needs. The inventory is complete—time to optimize your METOD kitchen!

Step 2: Use what you already have – and get the most out of it

If you have a METOD kitchen, you can easily customize its structure before you even start renovating or refreshing.

This is how you get the most out of your existing kitchen – tailored to your needs.

  1. Adjust base cabinets
  2. Changing wall cabinets
  3. Optimize workspaces

1. Adjust base cabinets

Thanks to METOD cabinets, you can easily adapt the layout of your kitchen.

Redesign your base cabinets to suit your current needs. With our shelves and drawers, which fit all METOD cabinet sizes, you can redesign the interior of your cabinets in no time.

This makes your kitchen even more practical – and exactly the way you need it.

2. Change wall cabinets

Just like with the base cabinets, you can also customize your METOD wall cabinets – for example, with additional shelves or internal pull-outs (depending on the model).

If you still have free wall space, now is the perfect time to add more wall cabinets for even more storage space.

Or how about open wall cabinets? They bring lightness to your kitchen and provide space for beautiful things you like to display.

3. Optimize workspaces

A kitchen renovation is also an opportunity to rethink the overall concept of your kitchen – especially the layout of your work areas.

As already mentioned, there are  three central zones that make your kitchen functional:

  1. Storage zone
    (refrigerator, freezer, pantry)
  2. Washing zone
    (sink, dishwasher)
  3. Cooking zone
    (stove, oven, hob)

Plan your kitchen so that these zones follow one another logically – for more efficiency and enjoyment while cooking!
