How does the IKEA kitchen installation service work?
Installing a new kitchen is an exciting journey. To make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible, it's helpful to know the process from start to finish. This 4-step guide describes each step and explains what our team is doing and what you can do to prepare for a successful installation.
Before you book – Plan for success
- Measuring and planning: A successful installation starts with a precise plan. The first step is to take the measurements of your room yourself. If you are not familiar with kitchen measurements, check out our Video instructions for kitchen measurement. If you need support, we recommend arranging a measurement service. Once your measurements are ready, we recommend booking a planning appointment with one of our kitchen specialists so we can help you create your dream kitchen plan and discuss the kitchen installation service in more detail.
- Prepare your space: The room must be ready for the fitters in good time before installation. Therefore, plan all construction work early. This includes completing all structural and basic work before the start of the installation – i.e., all work on walls, windows, doors, ceilings, and floors. You also need to make sure that all utilities (electrical, plumbing, gas) are in the correct end position. If you have an old kitchen and have not opted for the additional kitchen removal service (which is not included in the standard kitchen installation service), your old kitchen must already be removed.
- Get permissions: You will be responsible for obtaining all relevant building or conversion permits for your project.
- Consider additional services: Consider whether you need help with other parts of your project. We offer separate services that can be booked together with your installation, such as a kitchen removal service for your current kitchen.
Booking and managing your service
- Booking your service: The installation service can only be booked through an IKEA kitchen specialist during your planning appointment. The specialist will prepare a complete quote for you, discuss the installation based on your final plan, and help you book the service. Wherever possible, we recommend scheduling the installation service as soon as possible after your kitchen has been delivered.
- Postponement or cancellation: If your plans change, you can postpone or cancel your installation. You must contact IKEA Customer Service no later than the 4th working day (Mon–Fri) before the start of the installation to avoid fees. Please note: If you cancel or postpone your installation within three working days before the installation date, or if you are not on site when the installer arrives, a fee will be charged to cover the installer's lost working time. Additionally, the "Track and Manage Order" feature cannot be used to modify an order that includes an installation service. Therefore, we recommend contacting our customer service as early as possible if you are considering postponing or canceling the kitchen installation.
During installation – bring your kitchen to life
Before the fitter arrives, please:
- Check your delivery: When your IKEA kitchen products arrive, it is your responsibility to check that all boxes, countertops, and appliances have been delivered complete, correct, and undamaged. Damaged or missing parts that are not discovered before the scheduled installation date can delay the process. Contact IKEA Customer Service if you notice that items are missing or damaged.
- Store your products properly: Place all flat-pack boxes and appliances in the room where the kitchen will be installed or in an adjacent room so everything is ready for the fitter.
What the installer does during installation:
- Kitchen removal (optional, not included as standard): If you have opted for the kitchen removal service, the installer will dismantle and remove your old kitchen on the first day before starting the new installation.
- Installation: The installer takes care of all the work included in the service – from assembling the cabinets to attaching the worktops and installing your IKEA appliances.
- Clean work: The fitter pays attention to clean work and tries to keep dust and disturbances to a minimum.
Your tasks during installation:
- Ensure free access: Make sure the installer has clear, safe, and uninterrupted access to the work area.
- Provide facilities: You must provide sufficient electricity, lighting, and heating so that the fitter can work safely and effectively.
- Protect your home: Our fitters are careful, but you should put away sensitive items and cover furniture and floors in adjacent areas with dust sheets to protect your property in the best possible way.
After installation – completion and enjoyment
What the fitter does:
- Final cleanup: The fitter tidies up the work area and ensures the construction site is left in a tidy condition.
- Waste disposal: The fitter removes all product packaging from your new kitchen.
Your responsibilities:
- Final acceptance and signature: You will inspect the finished work together with the fitter to check if everything meets your expectations. If you are satisfied, you will be asked to sign a closing form. It is very important to note any problems or concerns on this form. IKEA accepts no liability for any damage or loss reported later that was not recorded at that time (except for hidden defects that fall under the terms of the IKEA product and service guarantees).
- Keep important documents: Keep all assembly documents, instructions, and any provided spare parts carefully.
- Enjoy your kitchen: Now you can start creating new memories in your kitchen.
