How do I take measurements of my IKEA kitchen?

When planning a kitchen, every millimetre counts. We offer both written and video instructions to make it quick and easy to take the kitchen measurements yourself. If you can't take the measurements yourself, we will support you with our measuring service.

Preparations Before You Start Measuring Your Kitchen

  1. Ensure the space is "measurable": To get accurate results, your kitchen space must be in its final state before measuring.
  2. Complete major construction: Make sure all major work is finished. This includes removing or erecting walls, and attaching plasterboard to all walls and ceilings.
  3. Finalize structural work: Plumbing, gas, and electricity connections must be in their final positions.
  4. Gather your tools: You will need a tape measure or laser measure, a pencil, and paper or a notebook. You can also use a digital device to record your measurements.

How to Measure Your Kitchen

  2. Be sure to document everything. Note the following specifications, which are the same details our professional technicians use:
    1. Room dimensions: Measure the width, wall length, and ceiling height. Mark the exact locations and dimensions of connections for electricity, water, gas, and ventilation shafts. Also, note obstacles like radiators, columns, or chimneys.
    2. Windows: Measure the dimensions of each window, the window frame, and the distance from the floor to the lower window sash. Remember to account for the space needed to fully open each window.
    3. Doors: Measure the dimensions of each door, the door frame, the thickness of the door, and the distance from the floor to the lower edge of the door leaf. Account for the space needed to fully open each door.
    4. Electrical installation: Measure the distance from each socket to the floor and the nearest side walls. Note the connection type (single-phase or three-phase), amperage, and the number of devices to be connected. Document the position of light switches.
    5. Ventilation: Measure the diameter of the ventilation shaft, its distance from the floor (to the bottom of the opening), and the distance to the nearest side wall.
    6. Water connections: Measure the distance of water connections from the side walls, and the distance to the water runoff from both the floor and the wall. Note any additional connections (e.g., for a dishwasher).
    7. Gas connections: Measure the distance from the floor and the nearest side wall to the gas connection. Also, measure the diameter of the gas pipe and its distance from the floor and side wall.
    8. Ceiling obstacles: Document the location and dimensions of all obstacles, including sloping ceilings.
