In 2026, the trends in home decor will be a focus on well-being, a love of retro, colors, playfulness, and an appreciation for everything handmade. Soft shapes and colors, as well as a closeness to nature, are on the surface, and home decor should be layered and personal.

The five biggest interior design trends of 2026

Well-being, colors, playfulness and soft shapes – that's the interior design year 2026 in a nutshell.

1. Holistic well-being

This trend is all about the whole – how your home feels, sounds, smells and looks. Utilising technology and smart solutions such as smart lighting, air purifiers, smart blinds and speakers help to transform your home into an oasis of atmospheric well-being. Green plants, hanging plants and an herb garden on the kitchen counter or balcony bring a sense of closeness to nature. Home is a haven for relaxation and enjoyment of life, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world.

2. Naturalness and craftsmanship

The cornerstones of a natural and artisanal style are natural materials, a harmonious color palette, soft and sculptural shapes, and layering. Straight angles are replaced by curves, and synthetic fibers are replaced by linen, wool, and cotton. Add a ceramic vase, a wool rug, something hand-woven, leather, or linen curtains to your interior - the key to style is in textures and soothing tones.

3. A playfully decorated home

A playful home is built on personal details, splashes of color and prints, and objects that are chosen with a little sparkle in the corner of your eye. Scandinavian minimalism changes to layered maximalism and familiar white and gray to a joy of color. If the playful style appeals to you, but also scares you a little, try adding color at the beginning, for example with just a striped vase, ceramics decorated with dots and splashes, or colorful floral patterns.

4. Retro and vintage love

Retro interior design is characterized by timelessness, strong curved lines and contrasts, and a 70s vibe. The materials include wood, marble, natural stone, and velvet. In terms of colors, the soulful retro style consists of burgundy, walnut, oak, moss green, and shades of brown and orange.

5. Color to life

In this interior design trend, too, the minimalist Scandi style with its white and grey tones is giving way to warm, rich, earthy tones. Terracotta and sand tones, as well as olive green and saffron yellow, shine in textiles and wall surfaces, and the boldest ones even paint the ceiling of the space to match the walls. The harmonious style is crowned by deep blue details amidst natural tones.
