Home visit: how to organise and create calm
In Hiromi’s small family home, great organisation goes a long way in creating relaxing surroundings. Her mantra is to "make sure every space is used and everything has a place". See how she does it…
Stack and store with boxes
"For me, organising for a calmer life is ongoing," says Hiromi. "Small changes like adding interior wardrobe storage and small storage can make a big difference." Hiromi has maximised the storage possibilities on her open shelving while keeping clutter out of sight with stacking storage boxes. "You can mix and match sizes to meet your different needs."
Double up your kitchen storage
Make sure no space goes to waste in your kitchen and you’ll boost its functionality and the enjoyment you get from using it. Hiromi uses smart storage ideas like wall rails, hooks, magnetic wall storage and shelf inserts for cupboards. "Don’t pack too much in though," she says. "You want to leave some room to make accessing and storing things easy."
Hang your watering can
Keep the things you love and use close to where you need them. For Hiromi, plants are "essential items for a relaxing space". Hanging her watering can above her indoor garden saves on space and acts as a lovely visual reminder to tend to them – a soothing ritual she treasures.
Keep calm, keep organised
"Home is a place to feel relaxed and peaceful – keeping it neat and unified through organisation is a big part of that," says Hiromi. "I plan by function and activity, storing what we use daily in sight and accessible and most other things in closed storage. For activities that take place around the home, try moveable solutions like trolleys or easily portable boxes."
