IKEA Family members can trust us
We at IKEA are concerned that you, as an IKEA Family member, should be confident that we process your personal data in a secure manner and in line with GDPR.
In this privacy policy you will find information about how we collect and process your personal data in connection with your IKEA Family membership, as well as what rights you have.
Data controller
IKEA AS (Org. no. 914 787 521), with registered office at Nesbruveien 42, 1396 Billingstad, is responsible for the processing of the personal data that is processed for the purposes stated below in this declaration.
What is personal data?
Personal data is any information that can be directly or indirectly linked to a natural person, including name, address, email address, IP address and mobile number.
The personal data we collect from you directly
When you create an IKEA Family account, we receive a range of personal data directly from you, including:
- Name
- Gender
- Birth date
- Email address
- Phone number
- Address
The information we collect from you indirectly
When you become an IKEA Family member, we save your purchase history if you are logged in when you shop. This means that we store all your receipts digitally on your Family profile. This way we receive information about the products you buy, amount, date of purchase and method of payment.
We receive personal data indirectly from you when you use our online IKEA Family services, including when you visit your IKEA Family profile and otherwise make purchases via our website. This includes personal data such as the date and time you visited our website, the type of mobile/PC you used when you visited the website, which operating system and browser you use, as well as IP addresses.
The personal data we collect from other sources
We may also receive personal data from other sources, such as publicly available registers.
Deletion of personal data
If your account has been inactive for more than 36 months, it will be deleted for security reasons.Manage membership
It is necessary for us to process your personal data in order to be able to offer you a membership in IKEA Family, and thus to be able to offer you our membership benefits, such as discounts on our products. We use, among other things, your email address or your membership number to identify you when you log in to your IKEA Family profile. Your purchase history can also be used to handle any complaints or claims, or to check whether you have purchased goods with any defects. This includes us using information about you to retrieve previous purchase receipts, and thus help you in the best possible way.
We will also be able to use your personal data to communicate with you in connection with the completion of your purchases and any other services that we provide to you.
Marketing
General marketingWhen you register as an IKEA Family member, you can choose whether you want to receive newsletters by email and/or SMS. If you consent to this we will send you general information about IKEA Family offers, events and inspiration on an ongoing basis.
Personalised marketing
If you have agreed to us using your data to send more relevant marketing, we will offer you personalised offers, tailored to your preferences and needs. In order to do this, we need your consent. To give your consent, log in to your IKEA Family profile and tick the box for customised communication. To withdraw consent, remove the check mark.
Improve and develop our services
Your personal data can be used in anonymised form to improve, further develop and optimise our services and products, including the IKEA Family customer club, our website and our product range.The personal data you share with us in connection with any surveys and other evaluations may also be used to improve our services and products.
In line with privacy legislation, IKEA is obliged to base its processing of personal data on a legal basis for processing. Our processing of personal data is based on one or more of the following bases:
- The processing is necessary to fulfill the membership agreement with you, for example being able to offer you the services that appear in our membership agreement.
- The processing is necessary for purposes related to a legitimate interest pursued by us, provided that your interests or fundamental rights and freedoms do not take precedence.
- You have given your consent to the processing of your personal data for one or more specific purposes, for example for us to create a customer account in order to provide you with offers adapted to your needs.
- The processing is necessary to fulfill a legal obligation. For example, we are required by the Bookkeeping Act (Bokføringsloven) to store receipts.
We may share your personal data with other companies in INGKA group. We will also be able to share your personal data with our subcontractors if it is necessary to deliver the agreed service. However, we will never sell or disclose your personal information to a third party for the use of information for purposes other than those described in these privacy guidelines. We ensure that your personal data is protected when it is sent outside INGKA group to trusted business partners with whom we have a contract in place.
A company that processes personal data on our behalf is called a data processor. When we use a data processor, we make sure to enter into a Data Processing Agreement. A Data Processing Agreement is a contract that regulates how the data processor can process the personal data to which they are given access. Each subcontractor is obliged to ensure that the data is processed in accordance with the law.
If there is a statutory disclosure obligation, we will also have to share your personal data with public authorities. As we are a global company, we may be required to assist international authorities with information. This may apply, for example, to export controls, financial sanctions, sanctions, anti-corruption work, etc.
How long is your personal data stored?
We store your personal data for as long as is necessary for the fulfillment of the above-mentioned purposes for the processing of the personal data. However, this does not apply if storage is required by law for a longer period than the purpose dictates. If you opt out of IKEA Family, all associated data will be deleted immediately. We also delete the membership and associated data if the membership is inactive for 36 months.
How do we secure your personal data?
We have established routines and measures to ensure that unauthorised persons do not gain access to your personal information and that all processing of the information otherwise takes place in line with applicable law. The measures include, among other things, regular risk assessments, adapted technical systems and physical procedures to safeguard information security, as well as routines to verify access and other rights requests.The GDPR gives you a number of rights, including the right to access, correction and deletion of the personal data we have stored about you.
We are concerned that the personal data we have stored about you is correct and up-to-date. If you discover that your information is incorrect, we encourage you to contact us. This also applies if you want your personal data to be deleted. When it comes to requests for deletion, this does not apply to information that is necessary for us to be able to deliver a service that you still want to have access to, or that is required by law to keep the information for a specific period.
Your also have the right to object to the processing of personal data and the right to object to personal profiling and automated decisions. This means that you can demand that your personal data is not analysed to reveal your behaviour, preferences, abilities or needs. However, this does not apply if the processing is necessary to fulfill an agreement you have entered into with us or if you have previously given your express consent to the processing. If you wish to request access, correction or deletion, you can contact us at any time. We will answer you no later than 30 days after you have made contact. To ensure that we send the information to the right person, use the access request for verification (PDF in Norwegian) if you want to be sent the information we have stored on you, and send it to: [email protected].
If you think we are not following these guidelines for privacy, or applicable legislation, you can send us a complaint. You can also complain to the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet).
Privacy Policy for IKEA Family Account

We know how important it is for you to understand how we use your data, and we will always do our best to be transparent with you.
This Privacy Notice covers private customers who have an IKEA Family account (the “Account”). It explains how and why we collect, store, process and share any of the personal data you provide us when you use your IKEA Family membership in-store, online via our website and the IKEA App, on the Second-hand marketplace and when you have contact with our customer support centres. All information that we have about you as a member is assigned to your IKEA Family profile.
This Privacy Notice also tells you what your rights are in relation to the personal data that we process about you. We respect your right to privacy and are committed to maintaining it.

So, in order to be crystal clear, this Privacy Notice is only applicable to the Account and your membership in IKEA Family.
As joint data controllers, we will work together to offer IKEA Family and to manage your Account information. This means we both have responsibilities for looking after your data. However, to make it easier for you, your Local Data Controller is your main point of contact for any questions about your data and is responsible for handling day-to-day aspects of your Account, including most communications, the rewards and benefits associated with your Account activity and responding to your requests regarding your data.
Please note that we also act as independent data controllers for the processing of your personal data when you interact with each of us, either by – for example – making a purchase from the Local Data Controller or using the Second-hand marketplace, which is operated by the Global Data Controller.

We offer a great variety of services, benefits and rewards to our IKEA Family members including member discounts, reward points, purchase history and access to Second-hand marketplace, which is a Second-hand marketplace where you can sell and buy IKEA products to and from other IKEA Family members (the “Second-hand marketplace”). To be able to offer the best experience possible, we use your personal data to tailor our content, offer services, improve your personalised experience and deliver marketing messages (including advertisements and offers) to the expectations and needs of our Family Members.

Additionally, collecting and processing your data allows us to provide you support where you need it, manage your requests for information and services and, where necessary, manage any complaints you may have related to your Account or IKEA Family.
We will also analyse your personal data for information security and statistical purposes and share your personal data with other companies within Ingka Group where those other companies share various operations and business processes with us. We will do this in order to fulfil our contractual obligations to you, or because it is in our legitimate interests to do so.
When you create and use your Account we will collect and process your personal data. We may collect the following types of personal data:
- Information you provide directly to us: This may include your IKEA Family card – digital or physical – your name, home address, email address, phone number, and any other information you choose to provide when you create or use your IKEA Family Account, use your rewards, book a service, subscribe to our communications, use our Second-hand marketplace or sign up to an IKEA Family event or promotion.
- Information we collect automatically: When you interact with us through your Account we will automatically collect certain information, such as your IP address, browser software, operating system, and the IKEA store from which you have accessed the Account.

To create and manage your IKEA Family Account
We process your personal data to set up and manage access to your Account. This includes confirming you meet the age requirements set out in the IKEA Family T&C’s, identifying you during purchases and interactions online, in-store and on the Second-hand marketplace and providing Account management support.

To provide you with services based on your location
We use information you share with us about your location to determine your nearest IKEA store to identify your preferred retail market. This serves as your primary location for using IKEA Family services. We also use this to display your IKEA Family profile in the language of your choice.

We process the data from chat interactions you have on the IKEA website and the Second-hand marketplace to provide customer support services for requests and Account management. We personalise your shopping experience by performing analysis on user activity data to generate customer insight. If you give us your consent to do this, we will provide you with tailored content, product recommendations, targeted offers, and personalised marketing messages. We may also group customers through segmentation based on shared characteristics (e.g. purchase history, product preferences) and create lookalike audiences on social media platforms to serve advertising (using hashed email addresses).
If you choose to share your data about your home and interests with us, we will use this to provide you with better product recommendations.

We create lookalike audiences to serve you advertising based on your consent to receive direct marketing from us. This consent is collected at the time of Account creation and can be updated by you at any time.
To provide IKEA Family members with home planning and consultation services
When you book a planning or consultation service using your Account, we use your personal data to:
- Identify you as an IKEA Family Member.
- Save outcomes to your Account.

You will receive direct marketing messages including offers, promotions and events when you have actively given your consent to receiving such targeted communication. The Local Data Controller and the Global Data Controller have jointly decided that all such direct marketing messages will be sent by the Local Data Controller.

We process your purchasing data and user interactions to deliver our loyalty offer and rewards to you.

- Purchases you make by using your Account
- Returns of purchases made through your Account
- Storing receipts as proof of purchase
User interactions include:
- Your identification as an IKEA Family Member
- The benefits and services you use
- Surveys and competitions
- Signing up to an IKEA Family event
- Interaction with marketing

We do this to fulfil our contract with you in providing the loyalty offers and rewards defined within the IKEA Family T&Cs. When we invite you to participate in a survey, we have a legitimate interest in improving our products and services. Your consent is used when you choose to participate in an IKEA Family event or competitions which you choose to enter. Where required, we will also process your data based on the contractual conditions of the event or competition.
To help us track performance and improve our services
We use your interaction data to analyse trends and identify internal improvements to the performance and usage of IKEA Family. We conduct data analytics on IKEA Family account activity at an aggregated level or use pseudonymised data to allow us to monitor performance and continually improve.

We have a legitimate interest in ensuring the functionality of the website and the Second-hand marketplace and these functional cookies will always be kept on. Use of additional cookies for analytical and personalisation purposes is based on the consent you provide to us in the cookie banner on our websites. You can update your cookie consent at any time.
We keep your personal data as long you are an IKEA Family member. Sometimes, we may keep certain data for a shorter or longer period of time, for business and operational reasons, or based on legal obligations. The time we keep your personal data depends on the purpose it was collected for, so this can differ case by case. When we no longer need your personal data for the intended purpose(s), the data will be deleted or anonymised so you can no longer be identified. An exception applies when we are required to store personal data for a longer period of time based on applicable laws and legislations.
After 34 months of inactivity, we will send you a reminder that your IKEA Family Account is up for retention. You will get a second notice after a total of 35 months, and at 36 months your IKEA Family Account will be deleted.
Companies that provide services to us
We use third-party service providers (“service providers”) to process your personal data, on our behalf, and in accordance with the instructions provided by us, in strict compliance with applicable legislation, as well as this Privacy Notice.
Service providers include, but are not limited to:
- Third parties who provide digital services to us so that we can operate IKEA Family.
- Third parties who help us segment and understand our customers.
- Companies that provide advertising and marketing services to us.
- Companies that aggregate and/or anonymise clickstream of behaviour on our website, app and Second-hand marketplace.
Our Service providers will not transmit your data to other entities without our approval and without an applicable legal basis for such transmission. We undertake to only contract with entities that offer adequate guarantees of the implementation of technical and organisational measures to ensure the protection of your rights. All service providers will be bound by a written contract that regulates, among other things, the subject matter and duration of the processing, the nature and purpose thereof, the categories of data subjects, and the rights and obligations of the parties.
Other recipients
We may share your personal data with third parties (including public authorities and governmental bodies) when necessary for the purposes of (i) fulfilling our obligations under the IKEA Family T&C’s and (ii) complying with legal obligations.
We may also share the personal data we collect with other companies in Ingka Group where those other companies share various operations and business processes with us. We will do this to fulfil our contractual obligations to you, or because we have a legitimate interest to do so.
We share data with Inter IKEA Group Companies (such as the IKEA franchisor Inter IKEA Systems B.V). Most of the data that we share is not personal data. If we do share personal data, this is only done in a pseudonymised form. This means that the data has been edited and/or encrypted so that Inter IKEA Group Companies cannot trace the data back to you. Inter IKEA Group Companies use the pseudonymised data that we share with them to maintain and develop the IKEA concept, IKEA products and IKEA services. You find more information and contact details of Inter IKEA Systems B.V. on www.about.IKEA.com. The processing of these data is based on the legal ground of legitimate interest.
We may transfer personal data overseas to companies within Ingka Group (where those companies share various operations and business processes with us) or to our service providers. This may require processing of personal data in a country outside of the EU/EEA. In those cases, the transfer of your personal data has been made lawful through an adequacy decision by the European Commission or because we have secured the transfer by entering into the standard contractual clauses (as approved by the European Commission) with the recipient. We will take steps to ensure that the transfer of your personal data outside of the EU/EEA receives an adequate level of protection as it does in the EU/EEA and if necessary, use other valid transfer tools or derogation in line with applicable data protection laws in order to protect and secure your personal data.

Under privacy laws, including the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) and Lov om behandling av personopplysninger (personopplysningsloven), you have a number of rights in relation the personal data that we hold about you. You may exercise these rights at any time by contacting us.. We will answer you no later than 30 days after you have made contact. To ensure that we send the information to the right person, please use the access request for verification form. Send the completed form to: [email protected]. Please note that if you send the form through any other of our available communication channels, we cannot guarantee that we can answer your request within 30 days.
The access, rights and controls might vary depending on your request, however, in general the following rights are available to you, unless we communicate or justify otherwise.
Access: You are entitled to gain confirmation from us about the personal data that we process about you, and, where that is the case, access to the personal data.
Rectification: You are entitled to ask us to update and amend your personal data that might be inaccurate, incomplete or outdated. Erasure (“right to be forgotten”): You are entitled to request us to delete personal data which is no longer necessary for its purpose.
Restriction: You are entitled to ask us to temporarily or permanently restrict/stop some of the processing of your personal data.
Objection: You are entitled to at any time, object to the processing of your personal data when the legal ground for processing this personal data is our legitimate interest. In certain cases, accommodating to your request could make it impossible for us to provide you with access to the Account and the IKEA Family benefits and services.
Right to withdraw your consent: Where we base our processing of your personal data on your consent, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time. You can exercise this right by changing the settings in your Account or by contacting us as set out above. Please note that withdrawing your consent does not affect the lawfulness of the processing carried out before the withdrawal.
Data portability: You are entitled to receive a readable copy of your personal data and, if requested, have the personal data to be transferred to another service provider.
Not be subject to automated decision-making: You are entitled to not be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing, including profiling, which creates legal effects concerning you, or similarly significantly affects you.
Right to complain: You have the right to send a complaint about our use of your personal data to your local data protection authority. However, before doing so, we would of course love to hear from you and get the chance to address your concern.
Your local data protection authority is Datatilsynet. For more information about them, please view their website at https://www.datatilsynet.no/. You also have the right to send a complaint to our lead supervisory authority, the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (Sw. Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten “IMY”).
Making a complaint to your local data protection authority or the lead supervisory authority will not affect any other legal rights or remedies that might be available to you under law.
As privacy regulations change and we develop our processes and services, we may make changes to this Privacy Notice. All future changes to our Privacy Notice will be updated online and accessed online with the last date of update displayed as below. If we make significant changes to the Privacy Notice we will also inform you by email.
We encourage you to review this Privacy Notice regularly for any changes. Your continued use of your Account and our services after any implemented changes or revision to this Privacy Notice shall indicate that you have been duly informed of the revised terms for processing your personal data.
