Comfort in rooms
For each room where they spend most of their time at home, almost one in five people are planning to make changes. That’s a lot of people quietly rethinking their bedroom, kitchen or living room – and what they need those spaces to do.
More than a feeling
Comfort isn’t just a feeling. It’s something you build, room by room, choice by choice. The spaces where you sleep, cook, eat and unwind are the places where comfort either shows up or it doesn’t. And when it doesn’t, you notice.
The #1 wish for an ideal home is one that helps you to unwind or relax.

Needs first
People want spaces that help them unwind and feel at ease, so IKEA interior designer Queenie Lee encourages them to think about their needs first and then choose the furniture for that space – not the other way around.
When it comes to living areas, for example, she advises people to “avoid applying too many rules” and to focus instead on making them “the place where your life at home activities can happen” – even if it’s a variety of activities within a limited space. This need for multifunctional spaces is driving demand for modular furniture, movable solutions and adaptable layouts.
Forget the floor plan
It also means letting go of the idea that every room has a fixed purpose. As Queenie’s colleague Abbey Stark points out, comfort isn’t reserved for people with the right floor plan, or even specific rooms: “Not everyone has a living room – but even if you don’t, you can still create a sense of comfort in other rooms.”
Imagine a dorm room bed turned into a daytime sofa with cushions against the wall, for example, or a comfy reclining armchair in the kitchen corner for screentime, working or enjoying a meal on.
