We do not accept wood that fails to meet our strict requirements, such as wood from illegal harvests, non-commercial high conservation value forests, areas with social conflicts, or genetically modified tree plantations. The key to our strong presence in the market is due to the historical bonds and trust we have built with the forestry sector over the years. Poland also offers a high volume of blonde wood species such as pine and birch, which reflect our Scandinavian design heritage and aesthetic. There has always been a high demand for furniture made in Poland. The high level of wood processing expertise for solid wood as well as board materials, combined with a strong supply of wood from responsibly managed forest, provide excellent opportunities. For many years, we have worked with partners in Poland to drive innovation and design across the entire wood industry including within our own IKEA Industry. It has an abundance of pine, spruce and birch forests which neighbour a well-functioning industry creating optimal logistic opportunities. It exports a high volume of well manufactured wood-based furniture across the IKEA supply chain around the world. Recent developments/actions With nearly half of Lithuania’s forests being privately owned, IKEA partnered with a group of small forest owners to support their rights and needs and help increase the share of FSC-certified forests by assisting them in achieving FSC certification. Group certification has been introduced before, to help simplify and lower costs for small private forest owners, but never at this scale. We connected our main suppliers to the process to support the small forest owners to gain market access for their wood, but they are not obliged to supply IKEA. In FY25, the FSC-certified forest area managed by this group expanded to approximately 131,000 hectares, encompassing 277 forest owners, 172 foresters engaged in pre-harvesting activities, and 7 certified forestry contractors. The group also broadened its scope beyond timber production by including two certified beekeepers. In 2024, the group also supported the initialisation of a new group in Latvia. Inter IKEA Group has recently begun to acquire forestland in Lithuania and Latvia. The ownership will enable regional suppliers and sub suppliers to have long-term access to responsibly sourced wood materials, providing better opportunities for future growth, and it will provide an opportunity to explore how innovative forest management practices can enhance climate resilience and biodiversity.

We strongly advocate that no matter where forests are based around the world, it is vital that they are managed and looked after while considering interests of people and planet. Forest owners, government, industry, environmental and social groups must work together to share expertise and opinions and adapt forest management practices accordingly to address the needs of today and tomorrow.

At IKEA, our wood sourcing and management practices comply with international and national regulations and legislation. Additionally, the IKEA code of conduct for suppliers, known as IWAY, is mandatory for all our suppliers and service providers. The IWAY Forest Materials Section includes requirements to ensure the traceability and legality of the wood used in our products. To enforce these standards, we conduct both announced and unannounced IWAY audits using approved auditors. These audits target IKEA business partners utilizing forest materials, especially in high-risk supply chains. Moreover, using Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified wood, provides added assurance that our operations do not contribute to deforestation. FSC certification supports the evaluation and protection of high conservation value areas, ensuring they are excluded from logging. Whilst more remains to be done, strong progress has been seen. One especially good outcome from this work is how small holders in other markets have been curious to learn from their approach, inspired to start taking similar steps. We are engaging in discussions about the potential role of increasing tree-species diversity, which may contribute to building more resilient forest ecosystems capable of withstanding climate change impacts such as insect outbreaks and storms. For many years, we have also supported non-government forest owners in obtaining group FSC certification which helps simplify and lower costs for small private owners.

The project is made in collaboration with European Forest Institute and the NGO Preferred by Nature. The aim is to scale these successful solutions across the forests we own or source from, and to improve forest management standards going beyond the wood sourced for the IKEA business.
