Tough tests for kitchen heroes

Ovens, hobs, fridges and all other kitchen appliances go through a lot in the kitchen. Day in, day out, year after year, they’re expected to be reliable and make your life easier. To make sure our products actually do, they go through our accredited test lab, specialised in appliances.

A scent of freshly baked muffins spreads through the large room. But it’s not time for a coffee break. It’s just Sven-Ingvar Johansson and his team testing an oven. “In this test, we’re studying the evenness of the browning and how much the muffins rise. We want to make sure the oven truly delivers what we expect.”

Standardised tests give answers

In the test lab in Älmhult, Sweden, products are examined before they are added to our range. The team carries out thorough tests based on applicable standards and legal requirements – covering everything from functionality and durability to safety. “For example, when it comes to hobs and ovens, we perform stress tests where we maximise the temperature in the oven and on the hob. We also measure the temperatures in the surrounding kitchen cabinets to make sure there’s no overheating.” A lot of the tests involve simulating the tough reality appliances will face in everyday use. “On average, a refrigerator door is opened about 80 times a day, which is why we test to make sure this doesn’t affect the temperature inside.”

Safe products for life at home

Another important part of testing involves risk analyses – making sure fridges don’t tip over when drawers are extended, that you won’t get pinched by the oven door, and that there are no sharp edges on the dishwasher. So, what happens if a product doesn’t live up to a demand? “Then the supplier has to examine and fix the problem before we test again,” says Sven-Ingvar, before disappearing into a special room where sound levels and suction capacities of all fans are tested. The room is about the size of a small kitchen – just like at home.
