How does the green façade at IKEA Wien Westbahnhof work?
At our City Store Wien Westbahnhof, we have opted for a green facade of 160 trees.
The 160 trees have a positive influence on the microclimate in the area. The contribution to a pleasant microclimate concerns temperature and humidity, so on a hot day the neighborhood can be cooled by up to 1.5°C. For this, the building was awarded the GREENPASS certificate.
How does it work with tree planting, doesn't it go to the building fabric?
With the help of (mobile) cranes, the 160 trees are planted on the façade of the building in oversized planters that are reminiscent of large flower pots. Additional steel cables support and secure the plant troughs.
How are the falling leaves and flowers of the trees disposed of?
The care of the trees is carried out by specialized companies. Maintenance intervals and time depend on the age and development of each tree and may change over the years.
How are the plants watered?
All troughs on the building are fed by an automatic irrigation system, which supplies the plants with water as needed.
What will happen to the plants in winter? Are they winterized?
Together with greening specialists, only those plants were selected for IKEA Wien Westbahnhof that can grow well under the respective façade conditions, which contributes to improving the microclimate.
