Vibrant hues and bold choices. You can’t get more IKEA than that! When creating a colourful feast of a collection, we needed a collaborator that shared our obsession with all things bright and beautiful. Enter Eindhoven-based design duo Raw Color. Pairing their unique design language with our home furnishing knowledge was always going to be fun, but we couldn’t have predicted the result. Just look at this pick 'n' mix candy box of treats – the TESAMMANS collection.

A trick of the eyes 

Our perception of a colour changes depending on the colours it is paired with. A red next to a pink looks tonal, but next to a blue, the same shade looks brighter and more contrasting. Magic! This curious interaction is central to the TESAMMANS collection. Over two years, design duo Raw Color collaborated with IKEA to create an 18-product collection that celebrates the ability of colour to transform everyday objects, mixing bright, saturated shades with more muted ones.

Thought, paper, scissors 

For design duo Raw Color, it always starts with an idea, sketched in 2D. Next comes colourful paper, snipped into different shapes and sizes. The simplicity of the process makes space for spontaneity, fun, and freedom! Unusual colour combinations? Playful proportions? Every idea can be tested out right there and then.

Design meets function

Sometimes seemingly simple designs are the most complex to actualise. The TESAMMANS wall clock is a prime example. “It took a lot of effort and evaluation to get the wall clock’s intricacies to work perfectly," says IKEA product design engineer Philip Holm. And there’s an extra hidden treat in the design too. If you watch the clock move, you’ll notice that twice every minute the gaps in each of the clock’s layers line up perfectly to create a moiré pattern.
