SÖTRÖNN
Some patterns should be repeated
Spring blooms in Tokyo! IKEA teamed up with Japanese designer and artist Hiroko Takahashi to create the SÖTRÖNN collection of textiles and home decor, inspired by the contemporary culture of Japan and life in Tokyo. Known for her bold designs that fuse Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary culture, Hiroko’s distinct circle design comes to life in vibrant colours, with strong graphic expressions.
The 17-piece collection features Hiroko’s expressive pattern design, which depicts the endless potential in just the bare minimum. Ceramic candles feature relief patterns, while throws and tea towels are made with jacquard weave for texture. Craft techniques play an important role in Hiroko’s work, “I often use traditional Japanese techniques. But that’s not because I’m charmed by the idea of things just being traditional or of their history or how long they’ve been used. Instead, I’m purely fascinated by the technique, or because it's something I've never seen before,” she explains.
From kimonos to cushions, Hiroko's creativity knows no boundaries, as the SÖTRÖNN collection demonstrates. The pieces are captivating on their own, but stunning when mixed, bringing Tokyo vibes to the home.
“In my work as a designer, I want to combine traditional Japanese craftsmanship with modern influences. The patterns I’ve designed for the SÖTRÖNN collection are simple but come in bold colours with strong graphic expressions.”

Print, repeat, repeat...
