The story behind the products
A bright idea
Designer Lukas Bazle’s storage lighting features innovative, practical solutions in a sleek design, and of course, at a low price. No more scary, dark closets!
Do you ever think about the lights in your cupboards and wardrobes? Maybe not, but if you’ve ever tried rummaging around a dark closet or choosing clothes in the early hours without waking a sleeping partner, you’ll appreciate how important good storage lighting can be. Getting an electrician to install wired-in lighting into built-in wardrobes and cupboards can be costly, especially if you're renting your home. That’s why designer Lukas Bazle designed KÖLVATTEN; cable-free, affordable lighting to illuminate those dark spots around the home.
Lukas didn’t want to reinvent storage lighting – just make it even better. Battery-powered, rechargeable, easy installation and automatic motion sensors for improved energy efficiency are just some of the features of the KÖLVATTEN LED strip lights and spotlight.
Then of course, there’s their slim, minimal shapes. But beyond their deceptively simple forms, it took a large team of engineers and designers to perfect the technology. “It took one-and-a-half years to solve all the technical stuff,” recalls Lukas. “Normally, you design the outside, with some knowledge around what happens inside, but for KÖLVATTEN, we kind of started to work from the inside-out. I knew the angle of the motion sensor and the angle that the LED needed to have, so we put everything together, then built from the inside to the outside.” Just like the closets that are brought to life when the light goes on, it’s what’s inside that counts.

Easy installation
No more wiring or glueing. The KÖLVATTEN light is battery-operated, so there’s no cable to deal with, and installation is as simple as sticking the self-adhesive plastic clips into place. Once you’ve found the perfect spot, the clips can be screwed into place for extra support.
Always energised
The KÖLVATTEN light is battery-operated and, when using rechargeable batteries, can be recharged. This is thanks to its integrated USB socket. When it’s time for an energy top-up, just unclip the light and plug it into a USB-C charger, then simply click it back in place when fully loaded.
Improved looks
The puck-like form of the spotlight and soft, rounded corners of the strip light fit in seamlessly with any cupboard, drawer or shelf design. Rather than end-to-end integrated lights that require measuring, the rounded edges of the KÖLVATTEN strip light means it looks just as good placed centrally in a drawer or cupboard.

“What I enjoy most about designing IKEA products is the involvement in the entire process. It’s not just about doing a nice sketch and then that’s it. It’s really in-house, so you’re involved in all the meetings, and you can really learn about all the technical parts too. Then of course, I also love the fact that you’re designing something that everyone can afford." – Lukas Bazle
