The story behind the system
Keeping up with IVAR
How do you keep an icon of more than half a century fresh and relevant for today’s homes? Designer Ebba Strandmark took on the task of creating modern add-ons for the storage classic.
The IVAR storage system is one of IKEA’s best-known products. Launched in 1967 as BOSSE, it has undergone a few name changes and even some tweaks, but for the most part, the versatile solid pine shelf unit has remained true to its roots.
Ebba was tasked with developing new additions that keep IVAR fresh and modern – pieces that allow it to adapt to changes in people’s lives, living situations and family – essentially enabling IVAR to grow with them. “At IKEA, it’s not only about making new products; we think about creating homes and spaces. Whether it’s adding colour or just a small new function, it’s about adding, taking care of and complementing the pieces you already have, rather than buying something new,” explains Ebba.
As a furniture designer and trained cabinet maker, not to mention someone who enjoys home organising, Ebba loves solving challenges that can improve everyday life, like creating order in a way that suits the home’s style, “Organising the home is beneficial for our wellbeing. When I design, I try to think about the entire room, not just one piece of furniture.” Indeed, one of the things that makes this icon a favourite more than 50 years on is that it’s customisable to fit any space or function. And with new additions that enable the system to grow and change with us, like the best things in life, IVAR just gets better (and more stylish) with age.

Doors
The design for the doors came from Ebba’s desire to explore new, modern lifestyles. Made from woven bamboo – a fast-growing hard material that is both renewable and durable, the doors provide privacy, while the light, airy weave has a transparent feel.
Underframe
The brief was to elevate or upgrade the IVAR cabinet, to make it feel more like a piece of furniture. Ebba designed an underframe upon which the cabinet can sit, raising it off the floor without the need for a wall, and that also creates extra space for storage underneath.
Storage box on wheels
Ebba's third upgrade was inspired by the idea of storing children's toys, although it’s ideal for storing anything from cleaning products to clothes and shoes. Set on castors, it's easy to roll in and out when in use.

“IVAR has lived for decades, so it wasn’t about reinventing the system, but more of a celebration, and also maybe to offer new warmth and functions." – Ebba Strandmark
