COP29: calling for urgent climate action at the UN Climate Change Conference
At the United Nations' 29th annual climate conference, COP29, global leaders, government representatives, businesses, and citizens will once again come together to address the climate emergency. This year's conference is held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November, 2024.
IKEA at COP29
At IKEA, we believe that, together with our partners and by leading with facts, science, and tangible actions, we have a responsibility to use our reach and influence to accelerate climate action.
Phasing out fossil fuels
Inter IKEA Group will be attending COP29 with a central focus on phasing-out fossil fuels. Transitioning to 100% renewable energy and ending reliance on fossil fuels is critical to tackling climate change. We're committed to this transition and have a clear agenda to drastically reduce our emissions across the IKEA value chain and to move towards renewable energy.
Millions of people are already affected by the climate crisis, primarily due to fossil fuel combustion and land use change. As we prioritise a full transition to renewable energy, sustainable land management is also essential. We will contribute by capturing and storing carbon within forests, agriculture, and products, while supporting broader societal climate mitigation and adaptation efforts.
Recognizing the significant role of transportation in emissions, during COP29, we will also advocate for policies that support transport decarbonisation, aligning these efforts with overarching climate goals.

Circularity
Circularity is another crucial element for addressing climate change, and we will highlight this at COP29. At IKEA, we are committed to transitioning towards a circular business. It is essential to reduce the pressure on nature, by minimising the use of virgin, non-renewable resources, preventing pollution, and promoting regenerative practices.
Addressing air pollution
At COP29, we will also emphasise the importance of tackling air pollution. Air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions often share sources, creating a strong link between efforts needed to reduce emissions. Inter IKEA Group, in collaboration with Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the Climate & Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), developed the first-ever guide for businesses on measuring outdoor air pollution across value chains. At COP we will continue to promote this guide and its further development.

Nature and biodiversity
Climate change, nature loss and inequality are interdependent. Building on the discussions about nature and biodiversity at COP16, IKEA will continue to emphasise the importance of this topic at COP29. Given nature’s crucial role in mitigating climate change, it’s essential that governments, businesses, and organisations work urgently to protect ecosystems, improve biodiversity, and safeguard water resources. IKEA has long promoted responsible sourcing and has led market transformation for key raw materials. We will continue to drive innovation in forest management, protection, restoration, and regeneration.
