The IKEA Sustainability Strategy
We want to be a force for good for people, society and the planet. For us, it’s about balancing economic growth and positive social impact with environmental protection and regeneration.
The IKEA Sustainability Strategy sets a common direction for the IKEA franchise system and value chain. The purpose of the strategy is to inspire, activate and lead us in our planning, decision-making and target-setting so that we together can achieve the positive changes we want to see for the IKEA business, and contribute to a more sustainable world.
The strategy identifies three major sustainability challenges that are highly relevant for the IKEA business: climate change and nature loss, unsustainable consumption, and rising inequality. These challenges guide our focus across three areas: Healthy & sustainable living, Climate, nature & circularity, and Fair & equal.
This year, we took further steps toward integrating our Sustainability Strategy into the overall IKEA business agenda - shaping our strategy to be more concrete, measurable and actionable to make sustainability an even stronger part of everyday business decisions.
We introduced the Objectives and Key Results (OKR) methodology, a framework that pairs clear objectives with measurable outcomes. This shift allows us to better track progress, align efforts across the organisation, and ensure our actions are in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
We will continue to review our strategy annually to reflect both external developments and internal ambitions, reinforcing our commitment to act on sustainability. We know don’t have all the answers and cannot achieve our objectives alone. Therefore, we are committed to working together inside as well as outside our business and being transparent about what we learn. We will build on our culture of entrepreneurship, always moving forward and not waiting for perfection, working together to achieve continuous improvements.
