Handmade products at IKEA
Artistry in the details
While industrial advancements have revolutionised how products are made, at IKEA, we also believe that the beauty and craftsmanship of handmade products are just as valuable as ever.
Our respect for handcraft is deeply rooted in our rural Swedish heritage: from the hand painted Dala horses commonly spotted on Swedish windowsills to the "trasmattor" rugs woven by hand from strips of old rags. Handmade products today, as they have for hundreds of years, emphasise honesty in materials, simplicity, functionality and craftsmanship.
How we work with artisans and handmade products has evolved a lot over time. Today, at your local IKEA store, you can find items made all over the world, from baskets woven by skilled hands in Vietnam, rugs produced on looms in India and Bangladesh, and vases masterfully mouth-blown in glassworks using age-old techniques.

Handwoven natural fibres
We are always amazed by what skilled artisans can do with simple lengths of dried natural fibres like rattan, bamboo and water hyacinth. Most of products made from natural fibres at IKEA are woven or braided by hand – including baskets, storage boxes, lampshades and even chairs and headboards. Take a look at our well-woven history with natural fibre.
Handwoven rugs and textiles
Even today, modern machinery doesn't come close to creating some of the centuries-old designs, patterns and structures that skilled rug weavers can produce by hand. Learn more about how these spectacular pieces are made using precious traditions passed down through the generations on a variety of looms and techniques.
Mouth-blown glass
From ultra-thin wine glasses to large, ornately designed vases in a spectrum of colours, certain kinds of glassware are best made by human hands. At IKEA, we work with talented glassblowers to create some of the pieces in our range. Learn more about the process and mastery behind the products.
IKEA Social Entrepreneurship
Since 2012, IKEA has developed business partnerships with social enterprises to design and produce products sold at IKEA stores worldwide. By focusing on inclusion, equality and livelihood we enable a better everyday life for people who need it the most.
