IKEA unveils the BERGVATTNET collection for water efficient living at home
Amidst World Water Week 2025 in Stockholm, IKEA launches BERGVATTNET: a collection developed to reduce water-flow rates, monitor consumption and collect water at home that would otherwise go to waste.
Water shortages and increasing levels of freshwater pollution impact the lives and livelihoods of millions globally. At IKEA, we are dedicated to providing products that encourage behaviours that reduce environmental impact, while also promoting better health and wellbeing at home.
‘’People are becoming more conscious about their water usage at home, but this remains sometimes an overwhelming and challenging task in their busy everyday life. What they need are easy, accessible and affordable solutions. That is why we created BERGVATTNET; a collection of smart products that inspire and enable as many people as possible to use water efficiently at home,’’ says Yi Ding, Range Area Manager Bathroom & Water, IKEA of Sweden AB.
Just like all IKEA shower heads, bathroom, and kitchen taps, BERGVATTNET is designed with a focus on water efficiency but with even more clever functions. On average, showering is the biggest chunk of a household’s water usage. This sparked interest in creating a collection of products that inspire and enable people to make changes to their everyday showering habits.
‘’The BERGVATTNET digital meter measures the temperature of the water, water consumption and how long you are using the shower for. It connects to most shower mixers, making the product simple to install and retrofit for many people,’’ says Tobias Svanberg, Innovation Developer, IKEA of Sweden AB.
Another product in the BERGVATTNET collection is the auto diverter that automatically leads the cold shower water down into a specially designed bucket while you’re waiting for the shower to reach the desired temperature. This is done by innovative engineering using existing thermostatic technologies in a new, smart, and simple way. Once the temperature is 32°C, it automatically directs the water to the shower head. The collected water in the bucket, which would otherwise be wasted down the drain, can later be used for different purposes such as watering plants, flushing the toilet or cleaning the floor.
Tobias continues: ‘’The idea of the auto diverter started from my own discomfort of wasting water when waiting for my shower to warm up, and early in the development process, we found that every customer we spoke to recognised this feeling and wanted a solution. We also noticed that in countries like Portugal and Spain, many have a bucket in the shower to collect shower water for reuse. This insight led us to also design a playful and functional bucket to collect this water and make people around the world inspired to do the same.’’
Inspiring widespread action in society
Innovative water efficient products, like BERGVATTNET, play an important role in the overall IKEA water agenda, a key component of which is collaborating with others to inspire widespread water action in society. Today at World Water Week in Stockholm, Inter IKEA Group also announces its participation in the Freshwater Challenge (FWC) Business Supporter Program. The FWC is the world's largest freshwater ecosystem restoration and protection initiative. Voluntary and country-led, the FWC has the ambition to restore 300,000 kilometers of degraded rivers and 350 million hectares of degraded wetlands by 2030, while securing the protection of freshwater ecosystems important for biodiversity and ecosystem services. Achieving these ambitious goals will require collective action between the public and private sectors.
‘’Freshwater ecosystems are critical for biodiversity, clean water supply, and climate resilience, and a key focus for the IKEA water agenda. By joining the Fresh Water Challenge Business Supporter Program, we will contribute to the goals of the challenge by leading projects where we, together with long-standing partners like WWF, actively engage in the protection and improvement of biodiversity, water quality, and quantity in degraded ecosystems in our priority river basins and beyond,’’ says Joana Barata Correia, Global Head of Strategic Sustainability Topics, Inter IKEA Group.
The IKEA business is also a founding member of the 50L Home Coalition – a global action-oriented initiative focusing on developing and scaling innovations in water and energy use in the home. The ambition is to make 50 litres of daily water use per person a new reality. The coalition recently implemented a pilot project in Los Angeles that consisted of integrating solutions from different market leaders into people’s homes to demonstrate how existing and new innovations can achieve substantial savings in domestic water and energy consumption. The pilot has already resulted in over 20% reduction in indoor water use after one year.
The BERGVATTNET collection will be available at IKEA stores globally and online starting August 2025.
