Good environmental choice, because the method of using a top layer of wood on particleboard is resource-efficient.

Countertop with a thick oak veneer, a durable natural material that can be sanded and surface treated when required.

Layer construction adds stability and makes the countertop less sensitive to humidity, thus, less likely to bend, split or crack than solid wood.

For quick installation and easy maintenance the countertop is pre-treated with hard wax oil.

The countertop has a narrow stave design that gives it a timeless and versatile look that complements both modern and traditional kitchens.

This product is the greatest!Patricia G.I bought this for my son and he absolutely loves it! He used it as a desktop for his computers and podcasts equipment!5
Wood counter topDAISYIt was perfect I put it in my laundry room over my washer and dryer . It looks great. And now I could fold my clothes on top of the counter5
Love itHolly C.Just finished putting on stockaryd on my 4 year old counter top. It was looking good but just wanted to keep up with maintenance. Looks like new again. We are mindful that it is a wood countertop but it has withstood moderate wear and tear. I still love it and would choose it again.5
Great for over a washer & dryerLeah S.Bought this to use over our front load washer & dryer in the laundry room. We've had it for two years, and it still looks amazing. We used the smaller size to cut & build a shoe bench which we also love.5
Beautiful and FunctionalJaredUsing this as a Desktop Currently and this is amazing and very sturdy and can hold the weight of multiple monitors on one mount. 10/10 would buy it again5

Waist a money. OverpricedLuda E.Not solid butcher blocks countertop. Poor quality. Very disappointed.1
Nice!GerardI use it for my PC and monitor. I also use a slide out underneath keyboard to save room. It's better to get this size, then the shorter version. I use the table raiser stand to support it better.5
Just ruined entire kitchenVALENTINA L.Absolutely horrendous countertop you can waste you money on. Mind you if you believe it’s cheap, it’s not. For a small kitchen, I’ve purchased 3 of these and 1 butcher block in walnut. Absolutely ALL have such contrasting shade and impossible to cut straight fir hired professional that the entire project was a waste of time and money. With pro installation the cost is over $2,000 and trust me I should’ve went with literally anything else than this horrid waste. I will provide a picture later I’m just so disappointed in the entire situation I can’t bring myself to even look at the final project. It’s a veneer again; the joint will never look good, the strips included for edges are breaking at the touch. Utter waste of time and energy. Look elsewhere. Not a butcher block. Period.1
so disappointingMatt R.Wow- I now know ikeas definition for “different” shades. I don’t own a truck, so in order to pickup these countertops I was required to rent one. Upon cutting the countertops I realized I needed 18” more. So I purchase another walnut butcher block, rent a truck again and upon opening the box at home, I now have a oak colored butcher block and a walnut colored-with no way to match unless I trial and error staining now..which was the purpose of buying the walnut shade-so I didn’t have to stain. Long story short, Ikea says I now have to rent another truck and return the block I. Hope that I can exchange it for one that’s the same color. Had I known this was the process- I NEVER would have purchased these here. Save your self so much time, hassle, and awful customer support.1
Perfect countertop ! This isCorinnePerfect countertop ! This is the second one I’ve bought , I am using as a desk top in our new office . Beautiful wood , sturdy and well crafted. Highly recommend.5
Wrong ColorAlandion B.im pretty sure i got the wrong color countertop! i wanted the one that's shown on the website and instead i get a dark brown and light brown color!4
Beautiful butcher blockJeanineUsed the butch block as a make shift mantel and 2 floating shelves. Looks absolutely gorgeous5
Great counterJEANNEEasy to install and looks great.5
Great as desktopJessica A.Bought the 74” walnut/veneer to use as a desktop for my home office. Placed it on top of 2 Alex storage cabinets. Despite it being a countertop, the Karlby was finished on all 4 sides which was great (no exposed particle board on any sides on the desk — this isn’t the case for all ikea countertops). It does hang off the Alex cabinets a few inches, but I’m intending to use that space for cord management anyway. The top felt a little gritty so I used Minwax Paste Finishing wax with an old t-shirt. Still feels a tad rough but it’s much better.5
Beautiful countertopAndreaThe countertop is beautiful with a beautiful walnut tone and stain.5
I was not looking forDavidI was not looking for a wood countertop but when I saw it I was sold. It looks amazing in my kitchen!5
new countertopsANGELAlove them5
PerfectStephanie S.I purchased two counter tops with the intention of building an L-Shape desk, and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of these counter tops! Paired with Olov legs, a couple of Alex drawers, and some melding brackets picked up online...the outcome was perfect and the desk is exactly what I was hoping it'd be. Can't go wrong for the price, it feels like it'll withstand the test of time quite well.5

Sustainable life at home

Better countertops with fewer trees

At IKEA we have a tradition of trying to utilize materials in the best possible way. For our countertops in thick veneer it means that we combine old craftsmanship with modern manufacturing methods. It makes the countertops easier to install, more stable and more resistant to humidity compared to solid countertops. And since we use the whole tree – even the crooked branches and the small twigs – we can save natural resources too.

Our take on wood

Wood is the material most commonly associated with IKEA furniture, and for good reasons. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. At IKEA, we believe that sourced in responsible way, wood is a key change driver for climate mitigation. In 2012, we set a goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have reached this goal and today, more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

“At IKEA we have a tradition of trying to utilize the materials we have in the best possible way,” says Johnny Rietz, who’s been involved in developing the kitchen worktops in thick veneer. The work started in 2008 when IKEA founder, Ingvar Kamprad, visited one of our suppliers and asked a simple question that took some time to answer: ‘How can we make this product using fewer trees?’

Less is more

“After some trials and errors, we came up with the solution. A core of particleboard and a layer of solid wood on the outside – or thick veneer,” says Johnny. “It’s a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern manufacturing methods. Paper-thin veneer has been used in fine, decorative furniture making for centuries, but for our worktops we’re using a much thicker layer of wood.” The thick veneer makes the surface hardwearing, and it saves raw material – a lot of it. From the same amount of wood needed to make one solid worktop, it’s possible to produce five thick veneer worktops.

No wood is wasted

Another advantage with this production technique is that you can use the whole tree; the stem as surface, and scrap bits – curvy, bent branches and small twigs – for the particleboard on the inside. The end result is a worktop that is every bit as genuine as solid wood, only more stable and more resistant to humidity. “Sometimes a small, harmless question can make a big difference. That’s exactly what happened with our kitchen worktops. It started as a challenge to use resources wiser, and proved to have positive effects not only for the environment, but also the quality. I think it’s great when that happens!” says Johnny.

Forests are critical for life on earth

Forests contribute to maintaining balance in the atmosphere, purify the air that we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nourish wildlife biodiversity and provide homes for indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. 90% of plant and animal species living on the planet need forests to survive. They provide sources of food, fuel, timber and many other ecosystem services that we rely upon. Sourcing approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood per year from some 50 countries, IKEA has a significant impact on the world’s forests and the timber industry and a huge responsibility to positively influence how wood is sourced. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure that the needs of people dependent on forests are met, that businesses can work sustainably, that forest ecosystems are protected and biodiversity is enhanced.

100% wood from more sustainable sources

At IKEA, we work with strict industry standards to promote responsible forestry. We don’t allow any wood in our supply chain from forest areas that are illegal or contain high conservation values or from forest areas with social conflict. Before starting to work with IKEA, suppliers must demonstrate that they meet IKEA critical requirements on wood sourcing. IKEA requires all suppliers to source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). All suppliers are audited regularly and non-compliant suppliers are required to implement immediate corrective actions. By working together with our suppliers, we are proud to announce that we have reached our more sustainable sources goal, which we set out to achieve by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030

As pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding eco-systems increases due to unsustainable agriculture, the expansion of infrastructure and illegal logging, it is time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for generations to come. The IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 set out to improve forest management, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change and support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests across the whole supply chain and drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. The agenda focuses on three key areas: • Making responsible forest management the norm across the world. • Halting deforestation and reforesting degraded landscapes. • Driving innovation to use wood in smarter ways by designing all products from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and eventually recycled.

We accomplish more by working together

For many years, IKEA has partnered with businesses, governments, social groups and non-governmental organisations to fight forest degradation and deforestation and increase the volume and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests both for our own supply chain and beyond. We are on a journey to improve global forest management and make responsible wood sourcing the industry standard, contributing to building resilient forest landscapes and improve biodiversity.

Material

What is veneer?

A veneer is a thin wooden sheet attached to things like particleboard to add a durable surface and a natural wood look – so we enjoy the many benefits of wood without using solid wood. The most common veneer types are birch, ash, oak, and beech, and we’ve made a special UV lacquer that helps preserve the wood's natural structure. A benefit with a slightly thicker veneer is how you can repair and sand the surface if it’s damaged to give furniture a longer and more beautiful life.
