Pricey, but sturdy and easy to assembleMegan T.This is a very nice bookcase. It was surprisingly easy to put together and it feels really sturdy. Most of the shelves are height-adjustable, which is really nice, and it holds way more books than the old IKEA bookcase it's replacing. My only criticism is that it's a little expensive.4
quality downhillerica G.i love the billy and own several in black. i just bought two new ones and was very disappointed with the quality. the paint job is awful, they look all scuffed up and worn. thought the first one might be a fluke but the second one is just as bad. my older ones look better/newer. this was a huge bummer, especially since the prices were recently raised.2
We like them so muchSteveWe like them so much we bought five5
Pantry renovationCarolynI like the depth of shelves since the room is small. It's easier visually to locate items, reducing clutter. Narrow cabinets decrease opportunities to become disorganized. I installed 6 cabinets with height extenders by myself. I added molding at cabinets base and between.5
Not just bookshelves...CarolI bought 3 of these (with glass doors) and had them installed in my kitchen (along its short wall) for a "second pantry." I recently bought 4 more of them (without glass doors this time) and had them installed in my foyer--for use as bookcases this time. I didn't really rate ease of installation, as I had someone else install them (I'm old) both times, but they told me they were, indeed, easy to install--and they attached them to the wall, and in the second installation, to each other--because books are heavy. I would recommend these to anyone; I have, actually.5
Billy BookcaseBRENDAI've been waiting over 6 months to nab one of these when they came back in stock. Popular item and hard to get! Happy with it. Already purchased and assembled 2 of the narrower ones to build a cornering unit but had to wait a long time for the standard bookcase to complete it.5

Amazing and Long LastingJacquelyn R.*update This bookshelf has held up for years! Since assembled over 15 years ago, it has been relocated serval times ( one move was ROUGH and left a LITTLE dent that tells a story lol); held up against playroom daily activities; It is now used to store our books and things in what is the making of a beautiful library. We are planning on getting additional bookcases and hope that the quality is just as good as it was when when first purchased it. I am not a fan of the thin backboard, but it serves its purpose overall. OH! And securing it to the wall from the top was essential for us.5
Great shelf butDesiree S.One year ago I got this bookshelf for $50 in the color white. When I went to get another in November it had went up to $70. Planned to order another today to see not even 3 months later it has gone up another $20 to a total of $90. Used to be an cute, affordable, and relatively durable option but at this point I might as well shop local then drive an hour to an ikea. Disappointed :(3
Durable and Reasonably PricedAshley M.My husband and I have always had overflowing bookshelves, boxes and closets full of books. We looked for storage options and found these. We now own 6 in Varying colors and will be buying more for ourselves and one for my little child. The one piece of advice I have is that you need to secure these well. We had a pretty big earthquake not long ago and our shelves stayed together just fine. I wish I had something like this in college.5
This bookcase was easy toconsuelaThis bookcase was easy to assemble and looks great in my daughter’s bedroom with the Micke desk. Thinking of purchasing another similar one for our den.4
Good, Not GreatMeganOverall, it’s a good shelf. When I opened the box to put the shelf together, I noticed the folded up back panel of the shelf was stapled to the cardboard box that it came in. I initially thought it was a scrap piece. After removing the staples and unfolding the panel, the seams were extremely apparent, so I drew a thin line down them with a sharpie to try to hide them better. The shelf holds up good and was pretty easy to assemble, but I’m still bitter about the backing.4
Love itAnaThis is my second billy bookcase and I love it. Super sturdy, pretty easy to assemble (took me two hours while working from home and watching movies) and just makes my room look great. I plan to purchase more in the future.5
wow, pleasantly surprisedSebastíanif you know me, its no secret that IKEA is one of my favorite places. Even with an annual Disnelyland pass, I visited IKEA more times than I did Disney... And I understand the differngt styles of work qualities of the various IKEA line - that said, I was pleasantly surprised and how well the Billy bookcase I recently purchased is made. Purchased with the intent to place temporarily in a spare bedroom to house some newlu aquired books, to my amazement, it easliy housed every single book and them some, and the amount of floor space used was minimal - sturdy, it stands stall now as a focal point and its classic traditional look blends nicely with the varied styles of furniture stored in the spare bedroom along with the homes built-ins - this isnt going anywhere anytime soon and will be joined in the near future with more from the Billy line5
Very efficient in dimension andAmareVery efficient in dimension and reasonable in price . Only need to be careful of its stability . Assembly is easy and attachments perfectly fits!4

Go-To BookcaseTaniaCan't go wrong with the classic Billy bookcase. We currently have 4 in our home - 2 with the glass doors and 2 without and they are sturdy, functional and look good in any home.5

Our take on wood

Wood is the material most commonly associated with IKEA furniture, and for good reasons. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. At IKEA, we believe that sourced in responsible way, wood is a key change driver for climate mitigation. In 2012, we set a goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have reached this goal and today, more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

Forests are critical for life on earth

Forests contribute to maintaining balance in the atmosphere, purify the air that we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nourish wildlife biodiversity and provide homes for indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. 90% of plant and animal species living on the planet need forests to survive. They provide sources of food, fuel, timber and many other ecosystem services that we rely upon. Sourcing approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood per year from some 50 countries, IKEA has a significant impact on the world’s forests and the timber industry and a huge responsibility to positively influence how wood is sourced. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure that the needs of people dependent on forests are met, that businesses can work sustainably, that forest ecosystems are protected and biodiversity is enhanced.

100% wood from more sustainable sources

At IKEA, we work with strict industry standards to promote responsible forestry. We don’t allow any wood in our supply chain from forest areas that are illegal or contain high conservation values or from forest areas with social conflict. Before starting to work with IKEA, suppliers must demonstrate that they meet IKEA critical requirements on wood sourcing. IKEA requires all suppliers to source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). All suppliers are audited regularly and non-compliant suppliers are required to implement immediate corrective actions. By working together with our suppliers, we are proud to announce that we have reached our more sustainable sources goal, which we set out to achieve by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030

As pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding eco-systems increases due to unsustainable agriculture, the expansion of infrastructure and illegal logging, it is time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for generations to come. The IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 set out to improve forest management, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change and support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests across the whole supply chain and drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. The agenda focuses on three key areas: • Making responsible forest management the norm across the world. • Halting deforestation and reforesting degraded landscapes. • Driving innovation to use wood in smarter ways by designing all products from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and eventually recycled.

We accomplish more by working together

For many years, IKEA has partnered with businesses, governments, social groups and non-governmental organisations to fight forest degradation and deforestation and increase the volume and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests both for our own supply chain and beyond. We are on a journey to improve global forest management and make responsible wood sourcing the industry standard, contributing to building resilient forest landscapes and improve biodiversity.

Material

What is particleboard?

Particleboard is made from recycled wood and sawmill leftovers – so wood pieces with the wrong shade, woodchips and sawdust become a resource instead of possibly being discarded. We use boards for things like bookcases, bed frames, sofas and kitchen frames. To protect from wear and moisture, we apply varnish, veneer or foil that adds to the furniture's look.

Designer thoughts

Designer thoughts

"It was 40 years ago I got the assignment to design a simple, functional and smart storage solution for books. I couldn't have imagined then that BILLY bookcase would wind up in so many homes across the whole world. I remember being especially pleased with the adjustable shelves and the depth of the bookcase - perfect for books. We were also able to transport it in a flat pack - an idea I was actually first to develop. The bookcase is still one of my favorites and I hope it continues to be around for many more years."
