Lively 50-year-old solves new storage needs
A lot can happen in 50 years. Perhaps the last five decades have seen man experience things at the most rapidly changing pace ever. When it comes to interior design, trends have come and gone, but IVAR storage furniture system is and remains flexible and adaptable. Now IVAR is solving new needs for lockable storage with a re-used metal cabinet.
The classic IVAR was launched already back in the 1960s and today it continues to contribute to orderliness in homes all over the world. Karin Blindh Pedersen is a product developer and has taken a closer look at what people appreciate about IVAR.
”It’s a flexible piece of furniture and sort of like a blank canvas that you adapt as you like. And it’s durable and robust – if the wood gets scratched, you just grind it over”, says Karin.
A cabinet for new needs
Over the years, the need for flexibility in the home has grown and IVAR has been updated with a number of accessories that customise how you can use the storage. But something was missing.
”When we performed new studies in homes around the world, we saw how some form of closed storage was needed for things like light bulbs, batteries, paint cans and cleaning items”, says Karin. ”A lockable cabinet which is durable and easy to keep clean.”
The need for lockable storage was found to be the same regardless of the size of people's homes. So the difficult nut to crack was the cabinet’s look so it would fit in, whether in a garage or in a small apartment, where IVAR is often a main piece of furniture.
Smart product development
Sometimes the solution is right under your nose and there’s no reason to reinvent the wheel. When the product development team looked at other products, they realised that everything needed was already in the range. Of course JOSEF metal cabinet and HURDAL’s lock were adjusted a little for new purposes, but there are many benefits by starting with already well-known products.
”This benefits our customers when it comes to both quality and price”, explains Karin. ”We know the designs work and we have good suppliers. This way we also save time and money in product development.”
New look for a timeless workhorse
After a number of tests and discussions with stores in all countries where IVAR solves people's storage needs, the team decided on two different cabinet measurements. The taller cabinet includes space for a mop and bucket, while you can store everything from sticky paint cans to sorted rubbish in the shorter cabinet.
”I really like how all those boring and ugly things can be next to books and decorations – yet hidden behind a stylish and lockable door,” says Karin.
The metal cabinet not only provides new functionality but also gives IVAR a new and slender industrial look. The timeless workhorse continues to deliver smart storage in homes across the world. Who knows what new needs IVAR will solve 50 years from now?
