Product details

So that your child can see and reach both clothes and gadgets on their own, we used the perspective of children when developing this pull-out storage.

Easy to assemble – you simply click the frame together and only a few tools are needed for the plinth.

With hooks on the inside and outside, it’s easier to hang clothes, backpacks and other things that would otherwise end up in a pile on the floor.

To save on our natural resources and make use of as much of the tree as possible, we’ve used sawmill leftovers and scrap wood in the particle boards for SMÅSTAD.

  • Two people are required to do the assembly.

Easy to find in a pull-out wardrobe

Do children's clothes end up in a pile in the wardrobe or on the floor? It's no surprise. For older children it’s cumbersome and takes too long to hang clothes on hangers – and for a four-year-old, it’s simply too difficult. So when we developed SMÅSTAD storage system, we wanted to make a wardrobe based on children’s abilities and their reality. Part of our inspiration came from an unexpected place – the kitchen.

Product developer Karin Blindh Pedersen and her colleagues started off by visiting families around the world. “We saw that even with wardrobes adapted for children, they’re often too deep. The children can't reach or get a good overview of their clothes.”

From kitchen regular to bedroom hero

The team looked at various storage solutions and realised what the pull-out drawer has meant in the kitchen. ”You see and reach everything. It gave us the idea of a pull-out wardrobe that gives a full overview and can be accessed from two sides.” Hooks and a shelf make it easy for children to both take down and hang back clothes and other things. ”Hanging a garment on a hanger or lifting it from a deep shelf actually requires several steps of motor skills that are difficult for a smaller child”, explains Karin.

The box for all ages

Safety experts were involved in the project and they realised that the bottom of the pull-out wardrobe needed to be stabilised with side sections. These side sections led to a smart box being developed with room for everything from the first package of diapers to costumes. Eventually it might become the teenager's dumping ground for their sports things. Karin thinks that the box sums up the entire pull-out wardrobe project. ”We want to give children of all ages the right conditions to do things on their own, in a way that feels easy and good for them.”

Material

What is constructed board?

We use constructed boards when manufacturing many of our pieces of furniture, such as tables and wardrobes. They are light yet still stable and strong. Each board has a frame made of chipboard, fibreboard or solid wood, while the inside is a honeycomb filling structure made of mostly recycled paper, which is extra durable thanks to its special construction. The board is then covered with a protective paint, foil or veneer depending on the style wanted.
