The speediest way from sofa to bed

Have you ever had one of those evenings where time just seemed to speed up? Somehow the clock wound forward and you've got to make the decision whether to stay or go home.

It's at that point that sleeping arrangements usually are made and the evening is paused to pump up a mattress, or sort out a sofa. This is one of the moments the HAMMARN sofa bed was designed for. You see it takes 30 seconds (that's if you do it slowly) to go from sofa to bed, is lightweight and light on the wallet too. The secret is its simplicity.

A place for development

Amongst the futuristic high rises of Shanghai a special section of IKEA is based. Named the Product Development Centre Asia Pacific, here a small group of IKEA co-workers create products close to local suppliers and test designs as they're being made. This is where designer Jonas Hultqvist and developer Sandra Johansson started work on the HAMMARN sofa bed — and had the challenge to create an affordable sofa bed that didn't compromise comfort. A challenge that had them rethink what a sofa bed was.

Starting from scratch

"A tight target does wonders for creativity," Sandra says. "To get the cost of HAMMARN to where we wanted it, we realised we couldn't rely on what we'd done before, or what else was out there." Certain elements that often are often found on sofa beds like wooden slats, fluffy upholstery and bulky folding systems had to be rethought. "We were inspired by old camping beds as they're so economical in materials and need to be easy to move," Jonas says. "So we asked ourselves, could we build a sofa bed with stretch fabric like a camping bed?"

Testing the concept

Of course as anyone who's spent a lot of time in camping beds might know, they're not always the most comfortable place to sleep, something the team had to solve. "What's often a problem when using stretch material," Jonas says, "is that it can bow in the middle and you end up sleeping on each other rather than next to each other." The answer was a low-tech solution, by using sturdy screws that are easy to tighten at home, the fabric tension could easily be kept at the right level.

A speedy transition

The next challenge, was working out a good way to transition between sofa and bed. "We realised we couldn't have a regular mattress on HAMMARN and fit the price we wanted," Sandra says. "So we designed one that could fold into 3 parts. In sofa mode you sit on two parts and have the third as a backrest. Then when you fold the bed out, you can fold the mattress out in the same way." The advantage of this design is that it can transition between bed and sofa in seconds and doesn't need much space. And because it only weighs 26 kgs it can be moved and used easily whether you're moving home often, or just want an easier option for guests staying over.
